Watch movies based on your DuoLingo vocabulary

I'm a part time developer and played around with doing text analysis of subtitles over Christmas, then cross referenced with my DuoLingo vocab to see which movies I'd likely comprehend. It was mostly successful and interesting to see how little it would take to understand certain movies (If you're watching Elf in spanish.. you might want to know duende). Based on that I started to put together a prototype of a web app that would suggest movies that are dubbed in various languages based on your current knowledge (pulling vocab from sites like DuoLingo / Memrise would be most exact.) Looking for feedback on the general concept and the landing page I put together:

Landing page: http://unbouncepages.com/lingosuggest/

Sign up for DuoLingo users: http://unbouncepages.com/lingosuggest-export/

Edit: adding an FAQ

FAQ

Q: I'm getting an error submitting the form. Was it received?

A: Yes. The landing page host is giving an error to the form due to the size of vocab lists, fortunately they are being received.

Q: When will I get my recommendations?

A: Soon! - but please be patient :) I posted this for feedback on the concept and it seems to be well received. The general concept / code works but it is not fully automated just yet. I'm sending out the first batch up recommendations this week but it may take some time.

Q: How can I suggest ideas?

A: Feel free to post them here or email lingosuggest@gmail.com

Thanks!

What an awesome idea! I'd like to see a good implementation of it. Learning a language by watching movies is very effective for me.

This is a genius idea, simple and effective. They should hire you to incorporate this into the app somehow.

I know I often find it very tedious finding things to watch and read - it's not that I can't go and look for stuff myself, but somehow, in a way I can't really put a finger on, it is much easier to give your time to something that someone has recommended to you.

More often than not I just end up reading the news or wikipedia, because I can't be bothered to look for and sit through a film that might end up boring me, I hate having my brain switched off that way. When something is suggested to you though, it miraculously changes that apathy to 'Why not give it a chance, at least one person liked it'. Like food that is put in front of you, it makes no sense to refuse :)

It seams to be a little to complicated. Why not just these way: - Movies for people how finished the tree - Movies for people how finished the first two branches etc. Their is not individual vocabulary on Duolingo.

    https://www.duolingo.com/ViArSkoldpaddor

There is, because you never get the full possible vocabulary of a lesson if you only pass it once.

Great idea! Can you give some general recommendation lists? You know, Duolingo actually give everyone the same vocabulary for a certain language... it seems unnecessary to process the same word list time and time again. Can it be like, for German learners, if you are half way through the tree, here are some movies for you, if you have finished the tree, here are some movies for you. The lists can still be categorized according to genres, etc. if you like.

    https://www.duolingo.com/ViArSkoldpaddor

That's not actually true, because the lessons are random to a point, and if you only do a particular topic/lesson once you never get the full vocabulary duolingo has on this topic. Also, do you have any links where Duolingo lists the vocabulary for different levels? I have not seen one so far. If there is none, everyone would have to also provide his skill tree in addition to the vocabulary -- and Kyle would have to run statistics on the trees and find out what word is likely to come in which course. Unless he happens to have access to the DuoLingo database (and I don't think so).

What do mean by random? The vocabulary on DL is certainly not random. If you say the exercises DL gives you in each lesson is random, well, that's true, but that's irrelavant to the current issue. And besides, say, I know ten words more than you, so I can understand a full new bunch of movies? I don't think so. A few words wouldn't make much difference. The difference only shows when the number is big. Like, I know 1000 words and you know 1500 or 2000 words. That's when there is a difference.

    https://www.duolingo.com/ViArSkoldpaddor

The current issue is that this is not a service DuoLingo provides, but some random guy that has no way to know what your vocabulary list is for a given DuoLingo level, because this information is unavailable. And yes, if you actually read the discussion he is thinking about customizing the suggestions based on your word strength.

I like the idea of having some "starter recommendations" based on broad knowledge obtained. What I find most compelling (and now possible given the technology available today) is precise recommendations based on your knowledge AND interest.

Did anyone else watch Muzzy in Gondoland in grade school(http://goo.gl/XgHDu0)? We watched the Spanish version, where a story was told using progressively more of the target language. My hope is to go beyond this with a custom program (content you WANT to watch, words you'll understand).

As far as leveraging DuoLingo trees - that's a great idea but consider this. Even if this was restricted to DuoLingo users, you will eventually outgrow the trees structure and venture into the "Immersion" tab. There, you'll start translating real world articles to continue learning (brilliant on behalf of the founders, this is what makes DuoLingo free and so darn sticky). As you do that, your vocabulary list will grow in an unstructured manner based on your interests... What if your Lingo Suggest lists grew / adapted to that?

In short, I LOVE the idea of a starter list based on trees completed. That being said - given my limited time the current priority is to continue to develop the personalized engine.

Will it also suggest films In The native language? Not just dubbed? Re dubbing cartoons are great dubbed because as it's a cartoon and not a person you don't notice the mouth moving differently to to speech which can happen when watching dubbed films. For example I watched the lion king in other languages and it still looked like the lions where speaking In that language, it didn't feel dubbed

Had the same issue, this worked for me as well. I read too fast though, so if you are going to use this, make sure you go add the bookmarklet from the linked page first, and then go to the duolingo vocab page.

Also, since it can be pretty long, i suggest starting by sorting your vocab page alphabetically before you start scrolling down, so that at least you get a sense of how far you are in the process (especially since by the end of the list it might look like the page is still loading...)

This idea sounds PERFECT for crowd funding on a site like kick starter or indiegoggo I think you would get funding overnight! I think this idea if done well could attract a big following you could actually raise money very easily to help you complete the project

    https://www.duolingo.com/ViArSkoldpaddor

nvm, ignore my request in that case ^^ (spanish, a gmail adress with a "+su" in it). I'll come back once it is automated. No sence taking up your time to process them by hand.

One thing: you don't seem to use the "needs to be repeated" score in any way. I'd suggest integrating it into your program. I know for sure that with words I haven't repeated a long time I have a hard time remembering what they mean, ie it will be uncomfortable watching those movies. However, IF the purpose is specifically to repeat the vocabulary, it would be good to sort the suggestions so that movies using those words are emphasized -- so that would add more options for the user

    https://www.duolingo.com/kylewill1

I do remember seeing yours! (a handful using the gmail '+' operator).

Thank you for the idea! I love this - both as a potential method to reinforce that vocab or focus on content which does not rely heavily on it. Currently my target is to identify movies with ~60%+ comprehension. Based on my anecdotal testing this seems to be the sweet spot for getting the 'gist' of the film. Ultimately would want to introduce the 'highest impact unknown vocab' or the words you don't now know but would ease your comprehension.

movies are movies, I expect some to be very hard and others not so much depending on their target audience. Have you seen the Intouchables?

I love the concept, looking forward to getting my movie suggestions. Watching movies has been a good way for me to improve my Spanish vocabulary and to get used to listen to hearing Spanish.

Sounds very interesting! I already had telenovelas in mind for when I'd feel confident enough, but movies could be great too. I just sent my vocab list! :)

You might also try Destinos: http://www.learner.org/resources/series75.html

It's a series of movies about a lawyer who travels through different Spanish speaking countries, looking for a lost family member of her Mexican client. It's designed for beginner Spanish speakers, and it gives you a chance to listen to different accents.

Oops, I forgot to specify I meant portuguese telenovelas! I'm already fluent in Spanish, but I'm still gonna recommend that link to my friends who are learning it. Thank you!
