I've heard that "para" is for people and "por" is for things. So I translated this to "La camisa es por el verano" which apparently should be "para" instead. How come?

It is not true that "para" is for people and "por" is for things. The rules are a lot more complicated: http://spanish.about.com/cs/grammar/a/porpara.htm
