Why would they be taking the Russian course for that? Contributing to it, sure, but taking it? I wouldn't help much, I'd think.

Duolingo seems to give more Target->Base translation exercises than the other way round, which is a... questionable decision. Some people would prefer more practice translating into their target language, because that's where your active production skills are put to the test. Since Duo treats all courses about the same in this aspect, doing the “reverse tree” gives more exercises for translating to your actual target language. Yay to more practice!
