Idioms and Proverbs
I just unlocked this bonus skill yesterday and it's been fun to learn them, but I noticed that just by doing the two lessons that I don't get to view all of the proverbs and idioms. For example, I noticed that in the first lesson, one of the words I'm supposed to come across is "occhio", but the idiom never showed up. When I went to Strengthen Idioms and Proverbs, it finally showed up in "Il vestito costa un occhio dalla testa." or something like that, which actually leads to another issue.
Not having all the idioms show up in the actual lessons is something I can get over because I'm sure it's like that for a reason, but what I would like instead is some sort of Master Idiom and Proverb list that I can reference, so I can memorize them and not just hope I'm lucky to run across certain ones while strengthening. This becomes especially frustrating when you get to a question that gives you the idiom or proverb in English and you have to recite it in Italian because when you hover over the words of the idiom or proverb in English, it gives you the literal Italian words instead of the Italian words necessary to say the actual idiom.
I was thinking the Master Idioms and Proverbs list could be underneath the lessons like Tips and Notes of other sections and could even not show up until you complete both lessons. I wasn't sure where else to suggest this and I suppose I could just write down the idioms and proverbs I do manage to come across in the strengthening in a separate file or something, but I thought it'd be more convenient to have the list on the actual site. I understand that this is a "bonus" skill and that Flirting and Christmas might be the same way, so it's not as big of a deal as the actual lesson sections, but I just wanted to get as much out of this as I can. Thanks in advance for actually reading through all this.
This is actually a problem I've noticed a lot, with many of the Italian modules: you often have to repeatedly strengthen a 'completed' skill to be exposed to all the vocabulary that you are meant to have been taught in that lesson (not to say all the example sentences).
Any lesson on idioms can only give you a taste of the meaning of the words. They have to be memorised as a phrase, and there could be thousands of them.
Sure, I understand that. What I meant by a master list is just a list of the ones you get in the Idioms and Proverbs section, not every idiom ever.
I made my own list, by copying and pasting them to a word document.
Truly, it is the only way that you can get through the bonus modules without memorization of each word in each sentence, since almost none of them are a word for word translation that could be learned.
In my opinion, DL is seriously deficient in idioms. I believe they constitute a much larger portion of language learning than many people realize.
I've spent the past year collecting these like it was passion. If you're interested in them feel free to check out this thread.
