"is eating" is the present progressive of "to eat". In French, it translates into "présent" tense (we do not have two different 'progressive' and 'simple' forms): "la fille mange"
To express the progressive idea, people also use the idiomatic phrase "être en train de + infinitive verb". In this case, it would be "Oui, la fille est en train de manger du pain."
