Freund(in) as friend or boyfriend/girlfriend

Is there a way in German to differentiate between "my friend" and "my boyfriend/girlfriend"? Everything I've seen so far indicates that in either case, it's "mein(e) Freund(in)" with no clear indicator of the seriousness of the relationship.

In context (e.g. "Hast du ein Freund?" found in the Flirting skill) it can often be clear what the meaning is (nobody expects the answer "Ja, ich habe viele Freunde!"), but if, say, I'm introducing someone to "mein Freund, Hans," is there a way to make it clear that it's "my (romantic) boyfriend Hans" and not just "Hans whom I hang out with"? Or, on the other side of that coin, is "Meine Freundin, Angela" always assumed to be "My girlfriend, Angela" unless otherwise stated?

Does being gay complicate matters at all? It usually does...

MacC, I had the same question you did. But I think no one has answered you in two weeks because the German language offers no such solution to your problem!
