Should we make an off-topic stream?

I think there should be a place to post discussions for casual chat. This stream would be called the "off-topic" stream, as discussions are not about language.

Damn, yes. This would solve a lot of problems. I'd call it "Fun and social", though. Would be for everything not fact/knowledge related (competitions, sharing achievements and progress, forming teams etc.).

The only problem I see with this is that there are users out there who would take it as an opportunity to do mean things. It would give the moderators extra work, work that they wouldn't otherwise and shouldn't have to do.

I assume you are referring to spam with your first point. But the organization of a forum doesn't influence spam. Spammers will spam, they don't care whether there is one forum or 27 or what they are called.

About the other thing: I actually doubt that the traffic to this forum would increase much. The thing is: this forum IS already a social forum, whether we like it or not, no matter what Duolingo originally planned. And this won't go away anymore. People will go on posting their social stuff, whether there is one or two subforums. But with two subforums, it would be better organized! Maybe the traffic to the "social" forum would increase a bit, but with the better organization, it wouldn't matter that much.

I wasn't only referring to spam, I was also including harassment, profanity and other forms of cyber abuse in that statement.
Spam wouldn't really be spam if it was allowed, anyway. Abuse is not okay anywhere.

I see your point. There could be a notice on top reminding the users of the rules and what to post there. In fact, this should be there already.

@Bersalon: But do you think that such a user cares whether there is a forum "Fun and social" or not? He will just do his abuse anywhere.

There could be a notice, and it might help some, but if a user is so hardened that s/he cusses or abuses others on the web, chances are that they won't heed the rules all that well.

I was thinking that an exchange stream would be helpful. Buusu has something like that where you write a paragraph about something and native speakers correct it.

That's called the activity stream, you can talk to your friends and have casual chat there! I'll post on your stream and we can chat a bit. :)

https://www.duolingo.com/QuadraticLingual

I'm talking about a public discussion, where everyone can participate.

https://www.duolingo.com/235agSND43T

Everybody can participate in the activity streams, just go to your friend's profile and ask them to join the chat that you're already having with a different friend! :)

Huh. I didn't know that. Thanks!

No, because if we do that, we may accidently encourage people to spam. Like ItsPolyglotEmily2 said, " That's called the activity stream: you can talk to your friends and have a casual chat there!"
Hoped I helped, and wishing you the best of luck and studies,
Sophia :)

Again, a good point. I can kind of see what you and Commons mean, the spam might become too much of an issue if this thread is created.

https://www.duolingo.com/-BellaLuna-

Yeah, and it will also encourage profanity, harassment, and sexual posts.

https://www.duolingo.com/QuadraticLingual

Right, which translates to more work for the admins. They already work hard enough, right?

My personal opinion of this is no. Besides the fact that it would encourage casual chatting (which isn't necessarily bad, it just wouldn't really be Duolingo's style), some users would almost certainly use it as an opportunity to abuse the commenting feature, which includes not only spam but profanity, harassment and other forms of cyber abuse. The normal forum is already getting too many posts like that. If we made an off-topic forum, the moderators would have to work extra hard to keep this site even clean when they shouldn't have to do it at all, since an off-topic forum wouldn't really contribute at all to Duolingo's original purpose.

That would take more administration and more server space to become what - Facebook? I really don't see the need.

https://www.duolingo.com/QuadraticLingual

Also, a need for increased funds could pose another issue, because they need to purchase more administration and more server space. Plus, if Duolingo becomes similar to Facebook, Mark Zuckerburg will sue Duolingo faster than the Saturn V.

It's kind of weird, I'm basically answering my own question by finding reasons not to create this stream.

Yes. I'd rather they focus their funds, and their core mission, on expanding the languages available, the tools for learning, and better methods of engagement. I see this as an expensive distraction.

Yeah, this is a learning site not Facebook, Instagram, etc.

That sounds like a great idea for some users, but it would open up doors to more spam, which would just make the servers slow. I don't think I would vote for that. Just an opinion, though. It's up to the staff whether they want to do this or not. :)

as discussions are not about language

Then why would that belong in a language learning site?

That would encourage spam.

https://www.duolingo.com/QuadraticLingual

You have a good point there. However, I think the no spamming rule applies to this "off topic" stream. This might discourage spam.

These are just my thoughts.

https://www.duolingo.com/Baconquistador

Yeah, the off-topic forum might actually clog up with people who slam others over spam and other related "cyber abuse"

I think it would be great to have a separate forum for things like XP competitions and whatnot that aren't directly related, and keep them separate from the language discussions. But the drawback, like others have mentioned, is that it potentially encourages people to create even more of the off-topic discussions, especially if you label it as "Off-topic", and thus more work for the moderators.

The whole point of Duolingo and its discussion forum is to be about languages. If you want to publicly talk about things other than languages, why come on Duolingo? Use another social media site.

Well, I don't really see the need for one, we already have activity streams just for that purpose :)
