It's from repetera, which is a loan from French, and ultimately from Latin. Interestingly, English seems to have borrowed the word earlier - etymonline lists it as an Old French loan.

English is structurally a Germanic language but has a vocabulary that is highly influenced by Old French (and thus indirectly from Latin) because of the Norman invasion of England in 1066 introduced a ruling class that spoke French and their vocabulary (and here is where the "trickle down" theory works much better than in economics) entered into Anglo Saxon dialects.
