Can you use "dans" instead "à" or is there some type of animate/inanimate rule?

+1 for the "dans" trap... :(

There's no animate/inanimate rule, it's a bit more complex! Have a look here for some good tips http://french.about.com/od/grammar/a/preposition_dans.htm

I fell into the "dans" trap here...so sad.

I suspected a trap, but I didn't know the correct form. I tried 'avec la robe rose', hoping it might work, but no luck! In English you could say "The girl with the red dress" to mean the same thing, but not en français, évidemment. :(

The "dans" trap is getting crowded: count me in, too. :(
