The Guardian has launching an investigation into the value of online education

Today the Guardian is launching Extreme Learning, a special series run in association with the Open University, which will examine how online learning is evolving – and what this means for students, lecturers and universities.

http://www.theguardian.com/education/2014/jan/13/online-university-courses-education-moocs

. Through a GuardianWitness project launched on Monday, those who have studied remotely are invited to share their experiences of distance learning, along with a picture of their virtual learning classroom.

You can follow the series over the next three months by visiting theguardian.com/students and join in the debate by following the hashtag #extremelearning.

Thanks for posting this, jackelliot! I'm really interested to see where their study goes.

I didn't see the option for sharing our experiences of distance learning. Is there a separate link?

Curious to see how this plays out. Years ago The Open University UK changed the learning paradigm by offering courses on TV and many student graduated to go on to bigger and better things. Online is far more interactive than TV with that said, I would love now and then to have a large carbon subject matter expert lifeform next to be to help me understand key concepts.

Well, the OU offered not only TV courses, but also regular tutorials with a local tutor and study groups as well as compulsory summer school attendance. At least that was the case when I got my OUBA (1975-81). OU Language courses were run by "conventional" universities with credits transferred to the OU programme. In my view an ideal mix of distance learning and personal contacts. Perhaps more effective than pure online learning? But the jury is probably still out on that.

Certainly the future as advocated by the Matrix, all we need to do is plug-in, get the online course for Javanese uploaded, and voila.

I really hope this spells the end of traditional schooling, it is far too rigid, criminalizes creativity, and instills spoon-feeding nature into people.
