Duolingo is a beautiful thing

I'm so glad Duolingo is a thing. I have ht opportunity to learn a language without paying and all the task involved. I'm glad we can share our opinion and at least someone will agree with you. I'm glad for Luis. He had the idea of duolingo and made it happen. To all of learners and admins and moderators. Thank you for your contribution.

Hey, you reminded me why I like this site so much. Such a commitment to putting people first, no hidden catches, no passive aggressive marketing, no ads, no 'freemium' crap. Sometimes I forget why it is special :)

I think the crazy thing about the world is how in general, learning a different language is thought of as a painful chore. What madness brought us to that?

A thought crossed my mind before, language is like one of the arts, it's like music and painting, and yet in school it is generally taught as if it were maths or science, a method that completely sucks the life out of it because it comes from the stubborn mentality that everything should be boiled down to pure logic. It's like we're trying to create 'linguists' instead of just enabling people to understand languages in general. The only conclusion I have come to myself is that languages are completely arbitrary, and that grammar is just a set of rules that a particular group people agree on.

I think that's why Duolingo works for some people, me included - it isn't in your face about grammar, it just presents the language as it is and says "Go on, you work it out if you are so smart". Which is frankly much more interesting to me, because the average person is far more attentive than we generally give them credit for.

I few years back I had bought a program to learn Portuguese. I quit using the program, then I found Duolingo. I've gotten more out of this program than i would have using the program. Duolingo is worth every penny! ;)
