Confused over the word cyngor

Could one of the Welsh team clarify my confusion over the word Cyngor? In the Order skill, the word cyngor seems to mean advice or council.

Does this mean the two English words are synonyms? In English, council means an assembly or body of people assembled for deliberation and possibly to give advice but not necessarily giving advice. If you give advice the English word should be counsel and not council.

So my question is, does the Welsh language make this distinction or can cyngor mean both advice, counsel AND council.

Yes cyngor can mean both 'advice' 'counsel' and 'council'. They are completely separate meanings and depend on the context.

Thanks, that great to know and clears up my confusion.

While the singular words are the same, the plurals differ:

  • cyngor (cynghorau) - council (councils)
  • cyngor (cynghorion) - counsel, advice (counsel(s))

There are other words like this, but luckily not very many!
