Duolingo is the most popular way to learn languages in the world. Best of all, it's 100% free!

Plural You: Ni, Y'all?

The poor word "you", I think we English over-work it.

Subject singular: Du= You
Object Singular: Dig= You
Subject plural: Ni= You
Object plural: Er= You

To remember the difference between du and ni, I have been mentally translating it as y'all.

Has there been any consideration of accepting y'all?

I'm not even certain it's a good idea, as there are several variations (y'all and youse around my part of the world, ye and yiz apparently elsewhere) and none are Standard English, but it would slightly reduce the number of answers I get marked wrong. :)

I'm from where youse is more popular but I have always preferred y'all. Most people don't speak Standard English in day to day conversations so I really don't see why y'all is such a problem.

Then maybe they would approve it. The only reason I think they wouldn't is because many modern educators consider it bad grammar or lazy speech.

Yeah, but that's a sign that we have too many ignorant people in education. Those same people would not approve of ain't and that is a both a common word and linguistically appropriate.

I'm suitably neutral about the issue in itself, but I do feel a need to point out that this would have to be entered manually for every single acceptable translation variation for every single sentence containing a ni. It may not be logistically feasible.

And then other colloquialisms would have to be accepted and manually entered.

I think y'all is a great idea, but don't count on Duolingo approving it.
