Free Esperanto Course - FEC the ten lesson e-mail course

This resource came up in another discussion, and after some reflection, I decided it would be good to remind people that it is still available. It was old when I started learning almost 20 years ago, and has been reformatted once or twice in that time, but the content is still the same. Nevertheless, if you're looking for material for learning Esperanto, it's worth checking out.

Information on the course and how to sign up is here:

http://pacujo.net/esperanto/course/

The way the course works is simple. You're assigned a tutor and given links to the course material. You work through the material and for each lesson you paste some exercises into an old-school e-mail and type your responses between the pasted lines. The tutor receives your lesson, checks it over, and gets back to you with corrections.

There are a few reasons I'm recommending this course to people on Duolingo. The two courses dovetail quite nicely. Duolingo gives you the "instant gratification" of having your work corrected by a machine. FEC gives you the personal touch of someone looking at what you've written and telling you why it's wrong. Duolingo has a mostly intuitive approach to grammar. In FEC the grammatical explanations are kind of hard to miss.

While working (via FEC) with a student recently who had been working with Duolingo, I noticed that the kinds of sentences which FEC includes are different from the kinds in Duolingo, and so, a student could benefit from doing both.

I have been saying for years that the primary advantage of FEC is that you're assigned a tutor who can answer your questions one-on-one. I am continuously finding questions on the boards here which have been unanswered for months. Absolutely there's a place for the boards here (I love them), but wouldn't it be nice to know there was someone you could ask if you didn't get an answer?

Finally, if you complete FEC, you get an old-school web certificate "suitable for framing." Pretty nifty, eh?

For what it's worth, this is how I started learning Esperanto in 2001. :)

For anyone in the UK, I also recommend the EAB "Free Taster Course":

which I did, enjoyed and learned a lot from.

Esperanto-USA also has a free, 10-lesson, postal course as well. I sent for the first lesson, but never sent it back (now that I'm reminded of it, I may just go stick it in the mail today). The lesson was short and informative. It looks like a good program.

Thanks for positing this. I started my FEC yesterday and already on Lesson 5. I am not quiet done the Duolingo tree yet but I was looking for something to give me more practice and brush up on the core skills of the language. The tutor I have has replied quickly to each lesson and has given me some simple tips. I really would recommend this.

Mi aŭ farus nun aŭ neniam. Kiam oni finas la arbon, oni jam estas tro progresinta por FEC. Tiu kurso estas por tutkomencantoj.

GrandaUrso and i had a similar exchange on our profiles/streams where we said essentially the same thing. You're right that there's no reason to wait, since FEC assumes no prior knowledge of Esperanto (same as Duolingo.) And who knows, maybe the tutor can help with questions that come up on Duolingo.

HOWEVER, there were specific reasons that I suggested that the two courses "dovetail quite nicely" and these reasons apply even to at least some of the people who have finished the Esperanto tree here. Some of the FEC sentences are more complicated in some ways than what you typically see in Duolingo. I also see at least some people with a completed tree persisting in some pretty basic errors which, I think, a tutor could help with.

My advice: if you're interested, don't wait. If you've finished your tree and are interested, know that it's a basic course and give it a shot if you're interested.

Gxi estas simpla "ret-atestilo." Cxi vi skribis al via instruisto kaj refoje petis gxin? Estas facile forgesi tiajn aferojn. Memorigo ne malhelpus.
