Northern Sami language request!
Northern Sami, the most spoken Sami language with an estimated number of 15 000 - 25 000 native speakers! (More than the half of all native Sami speakers!!!)
Northern Sami is a part of the Finno-Uralic language family, alike Finnish and Hungarian. The Sami languages are spoken in northern Scandinavia.
Here is a link to the Wikipedia article: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Sami
Great thanks to those who have sent a request in making the course! ^_^
(I am bad at formulating texts .-. soz)
I'm a non-Sami Norwegian, and I would love to learn Northern Sami. The Sami peoples constitute a significant part of my country, yet I know so little about them, and even less about their language. And historically, they haven't exactly been treated very well by the government! Such a course would be a huge help in revitalizing what I think is a beautiful and important language!
I agree with you completely, and I'm a Swede with Sami traits 9 generations back.
This is a great suggestion, but there would need to be people who know both Northern Sami/Saami and English to be able to make the course on here. D: If there is any way we could let native speakers know about this, this would help the possibility of having a Sami course on here a lot as all of the Sami/Saami languages are endangered. :c
Considering the current drive to teach Sami languages of all kinds in Sapmi, I'm sure we could get this to someone who is interested in developing a program. I know I would have loved to have one before going, even if I didn't really "need" it to get around.
I already speak Northern Sami, but I would love for others to have the chance to learn it as well! :) Mun hálan juo davvisámegiela, muhto livččii hui somá jus earát maid ožžot vejolašvuođa oahppat dan!
Would you be willing to contribute to a Duolingo course? I might be able to find some other speakers for this.
It would be wonderful to have this course on Duolingo, especially given how endangered the Sami languages are. I'd love to learn Northern Sami if only to keep it alive.
I'd like Finnish and Estonian on here first but I'd love to learn a Sami language after that. Northern Sami is the largest and therefore the most likely to get a course if I'm not mistaken.
Sure, I'm Swedish with no known relation to the Sami people, but I'm not a stranger towards to learn Sami.
I love Northern Sami! There are a few sets on Memrise you can check out for now. I would love to see Northern Sami make it onto Duolingo.
With how the Finnish government is screwing over the Sami this course is imperative.
Ok guys, we all agree that a course in North Sami would be AWESOME. Now, what needs to be done to make this happen? Actual steps to actually start making this course? Any ideas? Are there any north sami speakers in here?
ok... what do we need:
- A group of sami/english speakers to translate sentences (how many?)
- Time for the volunteer sami speakers to translate (How long?)
- Recording of spoken sentences
... what else? Where to start?
We need native or near native speakers to submit their resumes to Duolingo. Then Duolingo has to decide that they want a Northern Sámi course. I suggest a public pressure campaign.
It would be so cool if Sami was on duolingo.
And the number of Sami speakers in the world would probably increase tenfold just because of Duolingo.
It would be great!
Given that that this course should to be useful for language revitalisation purposes, Norwegian, Swedish and Finnish translations really ought to produced as well.
Sami is very interesting but I think that other languages like Finnish and Estonian are more popular.
I’m currently learning the language using other resources (until Duolingo has a course). I recommend these resources, as they have helped me tremendously.
1) North Sámi: An Essential Grammar (Amazon - $40) 2) Memrise (free) 3) https://people.uta.fi/~km56049/same/svocab.html (free) 4) Marit Sofie Turi (YouTube channel)
I am Northern Sámi person and I speak native English also. The problem is that there are very few Sámi people who will be able to have a decent structure for the learning of the language. It's also much harder than most languages due to its 7 forms of noun and 9 pronouns
Would you be interested in contributing to a Duolingo course? I might be able to scare up a few other speakers, probably enough for a team.
Just writing this comment to say that I too would love to have a Northern Sami course on Duolingo. While I'm resorting to different textbooks to teach myself some, I think it's really hard to find good resources for Sami online, especially for people who don't already speak Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish.
So yeah, even though it probably won't happen (anytime soon), please consider this.
It would be great to have Northern Sami on duolingo because my grandparent is born in Lapland and speak Sami as his first language, so it would be a great way of connecting with my roots.
I would love to know any it is n amazing language and thus could help save the language from extinction
I would love to have Northern Sami on Duolingo! I know a few people who would potentially be willing to contribute with words and such, maybe even pronouncing it too.
The Sami rap in Norways eurovision entry really made it for me. I'd love to learn some of this language
Would definitely love this since I am into Sami artists (flesh and blood) wanting to keep the languages alive. Slincraze (which also has stuff in English and Norwegian), Amoc, and (as a bonus since it’s Finnish) Asa/Avain
yes that would be very cool to learn my native language, i only can this sentence in sout sami: manne lea goeksegh. haha it means i am northen ligth
