Simply adopting the names January, February, March....like many other languages do, would have been too mainstream for Finnish:)

Can I say syntymäpäiväni on maaliskuussa for my birthday is in March or is only the minulla on... version correct?
Both are correct. In addition, syntymäpäivä can also be used in the plural form when you refer to a party or other occasion marking the day: Syntymäpäiväni ovat maaliskuussa/Minulla on syntymäpäivät maaliskuussa. When you refer to the actual day, you use the singular. :)
