How do I work on my Speaking skill?
Hi, I have learned how to pronounce from watching french films and such but I have no clue how I am going to practice my speaking because I don't know anyone from school who is french and I am no where near good enough to skype with a native. Also, my friend had once skyped with a native and reported that he was apparently using vulgar language with him and insulted him for being "American". So I really don't know what to do as far as improving my speaking at this point. If you have any suggestions I would love to hear them!
I have conversations with myself and I also read the questions out loud as I'm doing lessons. :)
You could always try getting practise with native speakers through sites such as http://www.mylanguageexchange.com/ and http://www.conversationexchange.com/ as they're designed to help people practise learning languages with partners. I'm sure people on there would be willing to help you improve your speaking in French, and I'm sure they won't insult you as your friend had experienced.
It may be scary trying to find someone to practise with but I'm sure they'll be willing to help and understand your fears regarding it :)
I listen to Pimsleur. They get you engaged by having you answer questions and take part in conversations. I also used Berlitz CDs before and somebody just posted podcast that looks pretty good. http://podclub.ch/fr/ Also check out meetup.com for some French groups and see if you have "alliance francaise" in your area.
