I hope DuoLingo will start an incubator for Somali soon. It has a lot of potential (as seen in the comments so far) to be a solid Duolingo language. It also has some great things going for it already: 1) It's written completely with the Latin alphabet, 2) It's one of the Google Translate official languages, 3) It's relatively easy to learn because of its phonetic text pronunciation, 4) There are millions of Somalis all around the world - the Somali-speaking diaspora is spread around the world...literally making it a "world-wide language"! So, there are people around the world who want to learn the language of their new neighbors, or there are many ethnic Somalis who grew up in other countries and aren't fluent in Somali and would like to learn. That's why Somali is a great pick for the Duolingo incubator!

I have a lot of Somali students. It would be interesting to learn a little of their language. I hope people start the ball rolling on this one!

You can apply to contribute. Somali isn't on the list of languages in the Incubator yet, .but you can click enter other and enter it manually. Once they have enough potential contributors, and there's space in the Incubator, they'll start developing the course.

I'd like to have a course on Somali too. There's a lack of good textbooks and courses in my city although We have quite a sizable Somali community. Almost all the Somali I have learned this far I have learned directly from Somali friends to whom I've been teaching Finnish.

We need more African languages! Arabic, Somali, the planned Zulu, Amharic, Malagasy, Afrikaans, etc would be great.

This is probably the course I most want. It's got both the excitement of being non-indo-european, and the usefulness of being spoken by large immigrant communities in my area.

I would love to see Somali added. Until then, I am learning it through Transparent Language. And if you are from the Twin Cities, its free through the St Paul library! Hope to see you back here when its available in DuoLingo!

Oh, very nice! I do live in the Twin Cities and I work only a few blocks from the St. Paul library, I'll look into this option. Thanks.

I would love a Somali course. There are a huge number of Somali speakers living in Minnesota and I would really like to be able to connect better to the Somali community here.

I would also looove a Somali course. Same as others, we have a lot of people in Sweden from Somalia and there is basically no course available anywhere to learn Somali in Sweden. :(

On behalf of my Somali coworkers, I hope to see Somali soon. It would help them a great deal in their work here in Vermont.

I'm coming here to add my vote for getting Somali added into the incubator. I hope Duolingo is monitoring these posts and seeing that there is still interest in getting Somali added. I volunteer teaching English to Somali and Ethiopian immigrants and refugees in Minneapolis and I think it's important to be able to better connect with the community for those of us that live in Minneapolis. If someone from Duolingo could please let us know that they are hearing our feedback we would appreciate it!
