Language Exchange Community!

Welcome to the Language Exchange Community!

Please upvote this post to make it visible for more people. Thank you!

Hello all! I just thought to myself how great it would be to make a language exchange. A language exchange is when two or more people who speak different languages are practicing each other's language. For example, a Russian speaker who is learning English will help an English speaker to improve their Russian, and then the English speaker will help the Russian speaker to improve their English. I saw many posts where people were looking for friends to do a language exchange. These posts get downvoted or even deleted. Sometimes it happens because the poster shares information which can be used by third persons, such as email or phone number. Sometimes it just get downvotes for no reason and then automatically deleted. So, it is very hard to find people to make an exchange. But without posting a discussion nobody will be able to find you on Duolingo. So, I decided to make a place where it is easy to find language partners.

How does it work?

To find language partners, you will use this discussion. You will need to post a comment which must include:
* your level of knowledge in your target language using CEFRL:A1-C2. (For more information, look below)

  • What language you speak

In this comment you may include:

  • How you can help your future language partner

  • What you like to talk about (your interests)

In this comment you must NOT include information that can be used by third persons (your age, your address, phone number or email).
By this way, people who visit this discussion will notice you and maybe will write on your stream to begin a language exchange :)

Tricks

If you want to exchange emails, it's possible to post on the other person's stream and then delete, and they should get an email notification without leaving your email address publicly visible. Theron126
BUT: This would work only if the other person has turned their email notifications on.

Common European Framework of Reference for Languages

The Common European Framework divides learners into three broad divisions that can be divided into six levels; for each level, it describes what a learner is supposed to be able to do in reading, listening, speaking and writing. These levels are:

A1 (beginner) - Can understand and use familiar everyday expressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type. Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has. Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
A2 (Elementary) - Can understand sentences and frequently used expressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment). Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters. Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
B1 (Intermediate) - Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc. Can deal with most situations likely to arise while travelling in an area where the language is spoken. Can produce simple connected text on topics that are familiar or of personal interest. Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes and ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
B2 (Upper intermediate) - Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialization. Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party. Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
C1 (advanced) - Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer clauses, and recognize implicit meaning. Can express ideas fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for expressions. Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes. Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organizational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
C2 (Proficiency) - Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. Can summarize information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation. Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.

*ELEMENTARY USE OF LANGUAGE ----

A1 Can understand and use familiar, everyday expressions and very simple sentences, which relate to the satisfying of concrete needs. Can introduce him/herself and others as well as ask others about themselves – e.g. where they live, who they know and what they own – and can respond to questions of this nature. Can communicate in a simple manner if the person they are speaking to speaks slowly and clearly and is willing to help.

A2 Can understand sentences and commonly used expressions associated with topics directly related to his/her direct circumstances (e.g. personal information or information about his/her family, shopping, work, immediate surroundings). Can make him/herself understood in simple, routine situations dealing with a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and common topics. Can describe his/her background and education, immediate surroundings and other things associated with immediate needs in a simple way.

~~ *INDEPENDENT LANGUAGE USE -----

B1 Can understand the main points when clear, standard language is used and the focus is on familiar topics associated with work, school, leisure time, etc. Can deal with most situations typically encountered when travelling in the language region. Can express him/herself simply and coherently regarding familiar topics and areas of personal interest. Can report on experiences and events, describe dreams, hopes and goals as well as make short statements to justify or explain his/her own views and plans.

B2 Can understand the main contents of complex texts on concrete and abstract topics; also understands specialized discussions in his/her own primary area of specialization. Can communicate so spontaneously and fluently that a normal conversation with native speakers is easily possible without a great deal of effort on either side. Can express him/herself on a wide range of topics in a clear and detailed manner, explain his/her position on a current issue and indicate the benefits and drawbacks of various options.

~~ *AUTONOMOUS LANGUAGE ABILITY -----

C1 Can understand a wide range of challenging, longer texts and also grasp implicit meanings. Can express him/herself spontaneously and fluently without having to search for words frequently and noticeably. Can use the language effectively and flexibly in his/her social and professional life or in training and studies. Can make clear, structured and detailed statements on complex topics and apply various means of text association appropriately in the process.

C2 Can effortlessly understand practically everything which he/she reads or hears. Can summarize information from various written and spoken sources, logically recounting the reasons and explanations. Can express him/herself spontaneously with high fluency and precision and also make finer nuances of meaning clear in more complex topics.

I think this is a brilliant idea. In fact I'd like to see something like this stickied or at least very prominently advertised in some way.

Edit: One thing I would add - if you want to exchange emails, it's possible to post on the other person's stream and then delete, and they should get an email notification without leaving your email address publicly visible.

Yes, you're right. Email notifications have to be on, or you can arrange to send the message at a time when people are online. But I think it's good to make sure that people are at least aware of this possibility.

I am B1 in French, and that is what I would like help with. I can read pretty well, but conversation is still difficult. In addition, I am probably A2 in Italian. I am a complete beginner in German and Spanish. Basically, I am still stuck on the "The cat eats the duck" and "The girl drinks milk" sentences, but I have been focusing on French.

So, hello to all! My name is Malek!

1.) My native language: English (high English), 2.) Target language: German, 3.) Current level of German proficiency: ~B1, 4.) Current Country of Residence: Germany (Baden Wuerttemberg), 5.) Weak Point(s): Grammar, grammar, and grammar!!!, 6.) Strong Point(s): I have a pretty solid feel for the language, and a very good (almost native) pronunciation, 7.) Recommendations: That we correct each others EVERY mistake (unless you prefer otherwise) and that we have grand level of patience and understanding for one another.

I'm searching for ONLY those who are serious about improving their English and assisting me to do the same with my German. I have a large desire to improve my German and an even larger NEED. I am open to talking about ANYTHING under the sun. I've never done a language exchange before, but I recommend starting off with simply writing back and forth a few times, and then if we deem that we can be of mutual benefit of one another, then we could look into doing weekly or bi-weekly Skype chats.

So -- who's with me?!? Wer macht mit!!!
