Just two questions ago, duolingo accepted el joven as the youth. Some consistency would be nice!

It could be that youth was referring to a young man not youth as a stage of life

Yes. This could have been interpreted as "el joven"- "the youth" as in a "youthful boy/child"

I live in Panama and el joven is always used. I have NEVER heard anyone use the word la juventud. El joven should also be a correct answer in this question.
