I personally believe that we are surrounded by Spanish a lot more often than Italian. More songs in Spanish make it to international fame and surely one has heard a Spanish-speaking actor/actress giving an interview in her native tongue. So we get exposed to the language on a higher rate which facilitates the learning process. Well, my two cents. I have troubles with Italian as well and barely ever finish a lesson.

The only things I've found easier with Spanish are plurals and possessives (i.e. "mis hermanos" vs. "i miei fratelli"). I should know more the farther I get in the Spanish tree. Verb tenses will always make me want to punch a wall regardless of language.

The Spanish speaker is much easier to follow for me than the Italian one, at least for the first few Italian lessons.

Also there are some great extra sites for Spanish like spanishdict.com that really helped me. I haven't found the right complementary sites for Italian yet (I've completed Spanish but just started Italian though).

The prepositions in Italian are definitely more difficult. The declension system for Italian prepositions is about as bad as the German noun cases.
