Since I'm home schooled, my parents are my teachers. We use a lot of apps/online curriculum, and they came across Duolingo.

Duolingo is one of the best things that ever happened to me.

As Bersalon said, thank you to all teachers, and especially Duolingo teachers. :)

I'm homeschooled as well BTW. There seems to be a huge community of us here.

It's the only thing I hate about Germany. It's illegal there.

I would love to be homeschooled. I have problems with being bullied here in school.

May 13, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/PJMCD

If I were to give you any advice, it would be to not react to them. Bullies are always looking for a reaction, they find it funny. If you don't react, they won't have any reason to pick on you.

May 14, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Drew6ag

Talking about bullies, i want some advice. i have a teacher at my school that tells me i constantly 'underachieve' and that i do nothing but talk in her lessons. She loves my friend though, and i had a situation when my friend was telling me something, and she came over and told me to stop distracting ben - my friend, whereas ben was actually talking to me, not me to him!!!how do i stop her hating me?!!

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Unicorn.Sparkles

Bullies are stupid people- if some 'BIG TOUGH PERSON' (sarcastically) tries to hurt you, tease you, or ANYTHING else don't say anything to anger them, just get away and tell someone. don't keep it to yourself.... I have learned, believe me.... :(

May 16, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Evelierox

from what i believe do exactly that. And they really truly aren't big or tough. Just weak and small. We should feel bad for them but at the same time you should stand up for yourself and not let anyone hurt you. Just be yourself! and do NOT let bullies change that. Don't let them get to you.

I'm being temporarily homeschooled for the semester. It's been good. It's such a relief to get away from the chaos that is public school, and simply learn at my own pace. Duolingo has been a great way to continue learning Spanish outside of school, and it's way more fun than my Spanish class ever was!! It's also great that you can learn more than one language on Duolingo. I've always dreamed of becoming a polyglot and I think this is my answer. Thanks to my teachers who made school bearable while I was there.

Only if your education is up to scratch in all the required areas.

There is no reason a homeschooled person cannot then go on to take exams and entrance tests then study in university and take a degree. But getting there depends on the calibre of the education recieved at home, which can be problematic if the homeschooling 'teachers' do not have or have access to the necessary skills.

There are very many reasons to homeschool and unfortunately in some cases it is so that parents can restrict the education children receive so as to contol their capacity to think independently or to access higher education. Such children will find getting a degree very difficult but given time and enough hard work anyone can do it.

sighs because homeschooling is a real education and we can be smarter then some public schoolers please. once someone told me "oh if your homeschooled you don't know anything...what's 2 plus 0?" and she laughed out loud i felt hurt and mad. but homeschoolers get just as much education. and more time with special people. theres way more pros in homeschooling then cons. the cons are when people think your uneducates and a loner with no friends. but really i have at least 100 friends and i have a high iq it runs in my moms side. she was homeschooled now and knows a LOT. any education is "real education"

Note: Tell me if I should remove this comment, because it isn't technically about a teacher who taught me a language, other than that of faith and hope.

It was my Geography teacher. And she has given me confidence in my Geography (although her marking was strict to the extreme) as well as in myself. Every week, we have a class called 'Value Education' and she used to talk about life and faith and so on. She gave advice to many students (one of them being my close friend, who was badly depressed). She was a great inspiration, really.

Unfortunately, she retired from school last Friday, leaving behind a handful of tearful students and colleagues. That's the story of the greatest teacher in my life. :)

May 3, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Shadow_Moonrise

Oh no ! It's so sad when a great teacher retires . Teaching can be hard , and you can ask my mom that ( She used to teach 2nd - 3rd grade , and is now a homeschool mom of 4 ) . What's even worse is that sometimes the mean teachers get put in their place , though it has not happened to me . But I hope you will try to learn on , and I hope you and your friend remember her words of hope .

May 3, 2016

I have experienced an awesome teacher leaving...a great way you can keep in touch with them is through email or social media. They usually love to have a student to chat with to keep connected with what was their "school-life" for many years.

May 13, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/Carolyn250

Nearly everyone has had one teacher who said the right things and built up their self confidence. I was privileged to be that one teacher some time ago. A former student told me, "I crawled into your class. I walked out." I still cherish that comment- as I think that is what a good teacher can do.

May 3, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/S0S_90

I gave you 10 lingots for that - and would have given you even more if I hadn't got tired of clicking. It's great when teachers try not only to teach you knowledge but also to strengthen your personality - and even greater when this attempt is successful.

May 3, 2016

Last year, I had a Mathematics teacher as my class teacher. I remember my seniors telling that she was extremely strict and not inspirational. When I entered my classroom the first day, I was just shocked to have her. She knew me, and I knew her from the beginning. And, not to mention, she would solve sums too fast; it was difficult to catch up with her.

Time passed, and after my summer vacation, we were back to school. That's when I discovered who she really was. She was highly determined and wanted us all to score better in our tests. And, honestly, I had my best maths scores round the year. She was strict so that we could learn and also was very funny. The best thing about her was that she let us do whatever we wanted to. We had her support all the time and had some memorable events. I also remember the days when we would come after library class and then groan because we had maths period next.

When our session was coming to an end, she imparted great knowledge to us ( She did that all year). On the last day ( PTM) , she told all of us that we are the BEST CLASS EVER. That really impacted all of us.

In fact, all my teachers of the previous session were amazing and highly inspiring. I really miss them this year.

So, to remember my special teacher, I and my friends meet her at regular intervals so that we can always keep those little precious memories alive.

May 4, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/profile/ChrissyFen

Congratulations. Both on improving your maths, and for having the maturity to realise that sometimes you need to do things you don't like (or have to do things in a manner you don't like) because they're better for you in the end.

I hope your language learning is much more enjoyable though - I know mine is!

I always think of teachers as amazing. I say they're at the top of the 'job chain' because every single thing you have learned is from a teacher! A teacher doesn't have to be hired as a school teacher, but can be a parent, friend, sibling, ect. If there were no teachers, people would be uneducated, and not know how to do anything. So, if your a parent, teaching you children right from wrong (and many other cool things), a sibling, teaching you other sibling(s) how to do something, or a friend, who is teaching you one of their talents, thanks! Every time some one teaches you something, thank them. And remember, everyone is a teacher, and everyone is amazing! *And that's why I want to be a teacher when I grow up! Thank you teachers everywhere!

My mom is busy most of the time, so she had me cyber-schooled. It works well, because computers don't make mistakes, usually. Sometimes, though, it will say, "Oops! Six to the power of negative two does equals one-thirty-sixth, not one-thirty-sixth. Better luck next time!" When it does that, I sometimes wish I could have my answers read by professionals. With Duo, those errors aren't frequent, but they do happen sometimes.

Amen. It's a sad fact that many teachers spend HUNDREDS each year out of their own pockets to help enhance the lives and education of their students, thanks to the minimal consideration and appreciation that they receive by most state governments.

Thank you!

My kids use Duolingo (as do I). I'm a little nervous, because this fall, I will be teaching my first two language classes to homeschool kids that aren't my own. Of course, instead of a textbook, we will be using Duolingo. :-)

I've had a lot of really good teachers. I'd like to remember my first language teacher here. His name was Mr. Taylor. Herr Taylor was my German teacher in 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. I remember that he'd take trips to Seattle and go to this German shop, and we could have him pick up German candy for us. Not only was he my language teacher, he was also my 4-H camp counselor for a year or two, and he ended up marrying a (younger) friend of my grandmother's. He also had a heart for troubled youth. He was very loved.

He was so smart on so many different subjects, not only German and German history. At my grandpa's memorial service, a few of us, including Mr. Taylor, stayed around and just talked on many subjects.

I saw him at my grandma's funeral as well, and talked to him again then. I knew that I probably would never see him again that day, at least in this life, because I lived in a different state and it was unlikely that I would bump into him again on my trips back to see my parents. Sadly, I was correct. He left us last year. He was so loved that he already has a school named after him though. He is missed by many.

As you can see above, Herr Taylor certainly didn't squelch my love for languages. I might still have been a linguaphile without him, but his German class was great.

Mrs. Lorring, my 4th grade teacher. I had been struggling with memorizing the multiplication tables since 2nd grade and my math confidence was very low. She gathered those of us who were struggling and taught us them to music. She used a record player, (it was 1980) and I can remember her taking the time to teach us so kindly. She also taught me to love to read books for pleasure. She would read chapter books to us after lunch. The first one was Stuart Little. I liked it so much, I got it out at the library and read it myself and just kept on reading.

Even though I'm addicted to Duolingo due to my Italian teachers not teaching me enough, I would like to reasonably believe that every man and woman in that profession enters (and hopefully leaves) with a strong desire to improve the lives of their students, one way or another. Not trying to sound political here, but I live in New Jersey, where teachers are treated horribly by our Governor and state government, to where funds are so low for many of them and you can easily tell that some of them spend HUNDREDS in their already low salary to make our educational experience the best possible. So, for that, I express my deepest thanks, knowing that the teachers I had not only cared about teaching me what they had to, but what they knew could help me in all aspects of my life down the road.

In 13 years of school education I had many teachers, a lot of them really good ones (and also a few really horrible). But if I had to pick one teacher that was the best it was the teacher I had in first and second grade. In kindergarden I had always refused to talk to the teachers and they had thought I was stupid or something like that. But she knew that I wasn't that I was just a bit shy and she knew how to treat me so that I hadn't the same problems in school that I had had in kindergarden.

When our class was informed we would have a new teacher at the beginning of the year, I was pretty indifferent to the matter. All I thought about was how much homework he would give. But at the very first day of school, when I stepped into his classroom, I definitely wasn't prepared for what came next. I wont reveal his name, for privacy reasons of course, but he's probably one of the best teachers I'll ever have. He's actually the one who showed me to Duolingo in the first place! He went to college in Germany, and was fluent in the language, which I had wanted to learn for years. When I had asked him if he had any advice on where to start he just said: "German's easy. Get a Duolingo account or something." And here I am! I couldn't thank him enough!

Back in 7th grade, my world history teacher sparked my interest in the world and language and she really built up my confidence. I remember being upset one day, and after class was over, she asked me what was wrong, and she cared. She genuinely cared about me, and that made me smile. She was my most favourite teacher and I sure do miss the stories and photos of her journey around the world.

Thanks for all you have done teacher (let's assume that they are called this for privacy reasons). Without Duolingo I would have no competition with my friends, which is weird because I am a competitive person! I've had (and continue to have) so many great teachers! If I had to choose 2, it would be my current Spanish teacher and my 5th grade teacher. My Spanish teacher was the one that sparked my interest in languages. She noticed my interest in Spanish so she recommended Duo to learn more Spanish. Here I found German, Norwegian, French... etc, and I couldn't stop learning new languages! My 5th grade teacher helped me through a tough loss. After my grandpa passed away, I was quieter and super sad everyday. My teacher noticed and helped me to feel better. It took a while, but she really impacted my life! - SportsOcean

I think my English teacher impacted me the most. I kind of feel like the minority at school. I'm a Christian and I have always been scared to show my faith. But a week before Easter this year we were supposed to put something that reminds of Easter in an plastic egg. At that point, I was sick of being scared. I turned my egg in the next day with total confidence. My math teacher opened my egg and asked why it was empty. I said, "On the third day, Jesus rose from the dead and the tomb was empty. That's why my egg is empty." My english teacher thought what I did was awesome and we talked about our faith for a little bit. My english teacher is one of the people who makes me who I am today.

I am also homeschooled and my parents do not know Spanish but I have wanted to learn it! We tried Rosetta Stone but that did not work well. When my parents came across duolingo my life changed! Duolingo is not only helpful but fun! We love Duolingo!
