when is "du" supposed to be used?

Hello, I'm a little confused on when "du" is supposed to be used exactly so if someone could explain it I would appreciate it. Thanks :)

I assume you mean in German. Du is the informal you. You would use it with friends, students of approximately the same age, pets, children, and family. For example, if you told your grandmother "Könnten Sie Essen für mich bitte kochen?" (Could you please make food for me?) she would probably not like the fact that you are referring to her formally as it is seen as cold.
