Football in Turkish
Hello all, I've been living in Turkey a few months and finally found a semi-regular football team to play with, the only problem is my Turkish isn't very good and most of my teammates don't speak English. I'm a goalkeeper, and I feel like being unable to communicate properly with my defense is a big obstacle. Can anyone help me with some vocabulary? I know the basics like: Kaleci: me! (goalkeeper) defans oyuncu: defender vuruş: shot takım: team top: ball maç: match hakem: referee ihlal: foul golcü: striker sağında: on your right solunda: on your left bak!: look!
But I'm looking for things like Clear (the ball): Man on/Man coming: Drop back: Send one more (like pass one more over): through (send a through ball): X is open: and anything else a good gk usually yells. Thanks for any help!
I don't know the English counterparts of football terms, but one small anecdote.
One evening, I was playing football with a team I wasn't acquainted with. The other team kept yelling "El var!", which means you touched the ball with your hand, and the game should stop. So naturally we all would stop. This started happening every 10 secs, and we were like "what the hell? Who touches the ball all the time?"
It turns out the opposite team members were shouting "Elvan", which was the name of one of their team members. We had no idea.
I only know an amateur midfielder who probably never listens to his goalkeeper so may not know, but if nobody else comes up with the answers for you before then I will ask when I see him next week. Meanwhile I suggest you also ask in the "English for Turkish speakers" forum.
No worries, I've been asking around too, I'll add things as I find them
