[FAQ] New Layout

Remember, I am not a Duolingo employee or developer and I have no ability to change anything. I am simply a regular user who wants to inform others about some new changes in the site.

Also see this thread about the losses of features: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1546916

Or, to go to my reposting of this when the rollout was finished: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1728042

Duolingo has a new layout! It looks like this:

Here are some commonly asked questions pertaining to the layout and their answers.

Q1. I've seen this before.

A1. If you've signed up in the past few weeks, you've been put into the test version of the site. That's the new layout.

Q2. Where's Vocabulary?

A2. Sorry, the Vocabulary tab has been removed. It will be replaced in the future with another vocabulary function of a sort.

Q3. Is the new design permanent?

A3. Yes.

Q4. Can I change it back?

A4. It may intermittently change back, but once the rollout is 100% across all of Duolingo's servers, no. Update: No.

Q5. Are you (personally) changing it back/reinstating Vocabulary?

A5. No. I am a user and cannot change the site. As I said, there are plans to have a revamped vocabulary function in the future. You can use this Chrome extension for now: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/duolingo-vocabulary-manag/mglmcjokbicehcaojghjmhfjnaooffcd?hl=en

Q6. Why don't I have it?

A6. The design is still rolling out. Update: And it's done.

Q7: I can't see others' trees!

A7. This is coming back in the future. I may make a userscript to add it.

If you have any additional questions, I can answer them in the FAQ, just post them in the comments.

I got this new layout in the middle of a session . . . with no warning. PLEASE bring the VOCABULARY tab back!! I liked being able to sort by strength, look at the words in the different lessons I had completed, practice by each of those lessons . . . Why in the world would a language site eliminate the vocabulary list???!!! Also, the cute new icons just take up too much space and spread out the language learning tree in an unattractive way . . . Off to try and find everything else that I can't find . . .

This is sooo true! How am I suppose to learn the language and practice the vocabulary when I can't write it down on paper and learn every word? So weird and so unfair... bring it back Duolingo!

Howdy folks!

I just want to make a blanket announcement that 856pm is not a Staff member, nor Moderator, etc. They have no ability to make any changes to the website. They are an everyday user who is just trying to put up some helpful screen shots to help others navigate new layout features while trying tracking down answers to your questions.

Thanks!

It'll be fully rolled out in a day or two.

The missing vocabulary tab isn't permanent.

https://www.duolingo.com/856pm

One thing I’m sure some of you will miss is the vocabulary page. After a lot of testing, we found that in its current form it wasn’t helping you learn a language faster or stick with the language you are learning longer. Instead, it complicated our system by adding another layer of information that wasn’t well integrated. We went one layer up and instead of "word strength" you’ll now see "skill strength" in a lot of places.

-- Marcel

The vocabulary page (as it was) will not come back, but will be replaced with another vocabulary function. I will clarify the FAQ.

For example I only know the English-German language apply this TAB and I think is very useful for every language, and don't mis with the disccusions Tabs, it is for we the rookies in every new language

Thanks

Sorry, Jupemo, but I don't work for Duolingo. I can't change the site around, only talk about changes.

Might take longer than a week. I think I saw mentioned "rolled out in a couple of weeks". I could be wrong.

I imagine that rolling it out to a portion of people at a time helps control for chaos (like all the bugs that popped up for some reason yesterday) and that Staff can focus on the feedback in more manageable chunks. (Guessing here but I think it's a pretty good guess.)

EDIT the couple of weeks idea I had comes from Luis statement here: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1545005

I think a lot of people are grieving the loss of something familiar. So, I'm not surprised to be seeing strong feelings like confusion, anger, denial, sadness, and lethargy coming through in people's posts. I felt all of these things myself in the beginning. I've had nearly 2 months to adjust and those feelings have been replaced by appreciation for the features. I can't imagine going back now. I would be rather upset if they suddenly reverted my account. Though, I am looking forward to the vocabulary tab redesign. I hope it is more intuitive than the last one. :)

Great idea 856pm! Could you work these things into your FAQ?

  • A screen shot of the new Sections that is located on the General Discussion page?

  • The heart at the top of the sections leads to the General Discussion "Popular" tab.

  • Activity is the new Stream. Users cannot post on their own Activity unless they are responding to someone else's comment there.

(I'll try to think of more things that came to me while I was getting used to the new layout.)

https://www.duolingo.com/856pm

I'll post it, just let me wait while Duolingo fluctuates back to the new design.

So along with not being able to post on the new Activity/Stream page, no new activity is coming up? Not showing what I've done since the switch :( Nor what any of my friends have done. EDIT: So it just doesn't post Refreshing a skill or Completing a lesson. Only that I've learned a skill.

Hi! I have some problem with the old and new layouts. I registered o duolingo yesterday, and I've got the new layout, but I had some problem with the site in google chrome. I switched to IE, but since this version of IE is no longer supported, I had to switch back to old layout...

But the change became permanent, I see the old layout under every browser on every computer. I want to change it somehow back to the new look, but I can't find a setting or solution to that. Is this possible somehow?

I'm sorry if this is a stupid question, I downloaded the extension because I really miss my vocab list, but it's completely blank and i have "no words" even though I am more than half way down the tree. Is there a step im missing to get my words?

Hi Naom11, the vocab feature is not available at this time, but it will be in the future. What you can do for now is google Duolingo Memrise (and whichever language you're learning for which you'd like to have the vocab list.) I hope this helps. For other Q&A you can also check out the Duolingo Wiki (unofficial) http://duolingo.wikia.com/wiki/Duolingo_Wiki#Getting_Help ^_^

I used to love Duo. Now? It is more a source of frustration! I have repeatedly had to refresh the page because of freezes. It can happen after the first question, after I'm halfway through a session, and even after finishing a session--and losing all the points for that session! This tells me that the people "in charge" are not. There is no way to contact Duo's people to let them know, either. Duo used to be fun, but the 'new and improved' site is definitely NOT improved, so now it's becoming a bore. ESPECIALLY French! It seems Duo can't find any willing programmers OR linguists to fix the problems of the 'new' site. It was a great idea in the beginning, but, since it's not generating income for anyone, it has become passé to the people who see the internet as only offering more ways to make profit. Too bad, huh?

Javax, everydoby has the right to express his opinion. I, for example, don't like it!

Of course everybody has a right to express their opinion. However, I cannot act upon those opinions regarding Duolingo.

Why do you underate the comments saying that we don't like it?

That's a matter of opinion, but it's not my choice. I don't run Duolingo, I'm just a user.
