Finished my French from English tree!
I now have four completed trees:
French from English, Spanish from English, French from Spanish, and English from Spanish.
Next up English from French.
Why do a reverse tree you may ask? Because the reverse tree forces me to answer in my target language instead of in my native language (English).
Wish me luck!
A near 600 day streak? That is very impressive. How did you discipline yourself to keep up such a feat?
I do it every morning after checking social media. Sometimes I do a lot sometimes just a little. It is a habit now.
Congratulations. Good luck with the reverse tree. Here's another one for your collection.
When my enthusiasm lagged I at least made sure that I gained a single XP to keep my streak alive. After awhile the bug would return and again I would be plugging away. I never worry about retention and memorization, I find that if I just keep going forward I have remembered a whole lot by the end of the tree.
To do the reverse tree I signed up to learn English and told Duolingo I spoke French. Now I must answer mostly in French. The regular way taught me to read French and translate it into English. With the reverse tree I am learning to write sentences in French because Duolingo requires you to answer most of the questions in your native language.
Hint: Turn off the speaker and mic at the settings page to avoid English/English exercises.
Btw I had a question, and be honest here. How effective do you think Duolingo is? Are you capable of conversing with a native speaker fluently?
I know you didn't ask me but I'll give my answer as someone who has just finished the tree too. I don't think Duolingo will make you fluent but it's one tool to help. The best way is to fully immerse yourself and have conversations in French with another French speaker.
Good luck, I have just finished my French from English too. Might give the English from French one a whirl too.
Thanks! I really can't remember how long it took because I was also leveling up my reverse Spanish tree (English from Spanish).
Congratulations! It takes a lot of hard work and commitment to stick with Duolingo and finish a tree! I'm happy to see you've done it 4 times! It's always good to see people improving. How good would you say is your French and Spanish at the moment?
Good luck with the reverse tree!
Thanks! I can read/write/understand spoken Spanish but I cannot speak it as those are all separate skills and I haven't yet begun practicing the speech. I can only read French right now (reading the Animorph series in French) but I expect to be able to write it after I finish my reverse French tree and do a good bit of the practice. That is the value of the reverse tree; it teaches you to write the language.
