If it's how do I cook meat, shouldn't it be Как я готовлю мясо? Because Как готовить мясо is literally "How to cook meat"?

This doesn't seem right to me. We are colloquial these days, not Shakespearian! How do you cook meat is much more natural, although still very vague.
