New Design: Pros and Cons

PROS: I love the fact that within the skills, I can now see a preview of which words will be covered in each lesson. It is more motivating than just clicking on an opaque icon, not knowing what I am about to learn.

  1. I love that I can see how many lessons are in each skill in advance, all the way down the tree. It gives me a better sense of what kind of work lies ahead of me.

  2. I like that I can't preview all the details of the upcoming skills in the little windows that used to pop up when hovering over a skill icon. I used to spend too much time reading through those. :)

  3. A lot of people are saying the colors are childish. I don't feel that way - it's fun and bright, and in a way using this kind of program is childish anyway, and that's what's nice about it. I like feeling like I'm playing a game instead of cracking open a thick book.

CONS: I agree with the users who have said the size of the icons is too big. I also use a laptop, and I feel like I can't see the big picture of my tree anymore.

  1. I'm glad to hear that the vocabulary page will eventually come back. I miss it already.

  2. I also prefer the stack of coins to the line chart. When looking back across my weekly progress, with the coins I felt like a winner when there was at least a coin or two under each day, and the bigger stacks were just extra special. With the line graph, I feel like when the line goes from a high one day back toward the low end the next day that I've failed somehow. I feel the urge to keep the line always increasing or something, which isn't possible. So it makes me feel less accomplished, even when I'm practicing every day. IDEA: Can there be two or three options in that view, so that some people can have coins, some can have lines or bars or whatever, and everyone is happy and motivated? Thanks!

This give much insight to the founders, of what they should change and what they shouldn't. Well said!

I still haven't got the new design yet, but I've never really used the vocabulary page. I think the vocab page would be more useful if you could see the translation of the word into the language you're learning, so from english to french or vice versa

Yes! I like a cave piled full of gold coins. Smaugalicious.

I only see the line graph when I finish a lesson. Is there a clickable button or icon to see one's weekly progress other than playing twenty questions with The Owl?

To everyone who thinks things are too big now: try zooming out. Usually you can do this by holding CTRL while scrolling with the middle mouse button. It's too big on my screen too, but when I zoom out a bit everything looks great :)

I agree with all of this! I love the clean new look and the cuteness of it, and all things considered, it's a good trade. But there are a few things which could be improved, most of which jaimiewith2eyes addressed in this post.

I do wish that the coin stacks were back, for the reasons that were said here. Also, it's important for my tracking ability for my Spanish class.

Another thing is the largeness of the skills on the tree: I liked being able to sort of see all of my progress at once without having to scroll down for 20 minutes to get to the next lesson I'm supposed to learn.

The vocabulary words would also be excellent to have back, but I've heard that they're on their way.

One thing that wasn't addressed here was the allowed message length. This was also a problem on the old version of the website. A few weeks back I sent my friend a nice, long message, but DL cut half of it off and sent only the first half. I guess there is an invisible limit for the number of characters you can have in a message? It would be nice to not have a limit.

Also, when writing a comment or a message, I would like to be able to hit enter to make a new paragraph without DL smushing it all together in the final product. And, I know there's a way to make your words bold and italic . . . but how do you do that?

And one final thing: I wish DL would give us the little clickable keyboard with the accent marks that they give us in the lessons and used to give us on messages.

Sorry for the long, boring comment; these were just some things that I've wanted to address, and I found the perfect place to do it. Thanks, jaimiewith2eyes!

EDIT: Two more things: for some reason, DL only sometimes shows the dates of things that have been published (comments, posts, etc). This isn't a big deal, but it's a little annoying. Also, there is no way to search for other members by username like there was on the old version. I hope this is only temporary?

I took a break just as Duolingo was rolling out changes to the site.. Now that I am back, the thing I miss most are the coins for the very reason you give Jaimie! It was a goal (and accomplishment!) for me to max out my coin stack for the day. As long as I filled up that stack I "won". Now that its a graph, that goal isnt there anymore...

Not like Im going to leave Duolingo over it lol but really takes the edge off of the one thing I was really working towards, filling up those coin stacks, making sure I kept going until I did was a visual representation of my efforts that made me feel pretty darned good.

It's automatic. It's been pushed out to most users, but it seems like just a few don't have it quite yet. :)

Well for those of us who need to just skip a recorded answer because the screen just sits there no matter how many times you repeat and repeat. Now I must turn off the mic. whereas before I could just give up one heart and continue. That option is gone.
