Long German Words
Translation: The association for the subordinate officials of the head office of the Danube steamship electrical company.
And I felt proud of myself for remembering the word Weltmeisterschaft.
....I still have a very long way to go.
The word above is unusually long. Words of the length of "Frühstücksfernsehen" (television for the early day) or "Fußgängerübergang" (pedestrian crossing) are quite frequent though. Normally two words get to be connected when they are already well enough established. So "Frühstück"(breakfast) and "Fernsehen"(television) are already compound words but do not feel as such anymore.
For example "Verkehrsüberwachung" (traffic supervision) is okay, but "Verkehrsüberwachungseinheit" (traffic supervision unit) is stretching it. Here "eine Einheit der Verkehrsüberwachung" is maybe better.
Really? In which one? Normally only the very important compound words are in there. Also it is the name of a fictional company which is used to illustrate how long a German word can get. I do not say that this is not a word. It is correctly formed and also has a small field of usage. It is unusual nonetheless.
this channel is great! I wish there was something like this for Italian too!!!!
You're learning Italian ? that's cool ! I'm wishing to learn it too after I become fluent at German
"Tschechisches Streichholzschächtelchen" Not the longest but the most screwed up to pronounce, in my opinion. Have to mentally prepare myself before speaking it out.
No worries... A lot of Germans have trouble with so many different sibilants so close together, too. ;)
"Donaudampfschifffahrtselektrizitätenhauptbetriebswerkbauunterbeamtengesellschaft" is a word. But all the german learner know that this language is able to build new words from other words, even if they make no sense. There is no such society or company and there will never be.
Here is the longst german word. That really existed. It was a law. German laws have often a really long name. "Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz" abrevation: RkReÜAÜG
The abrevation "RkReÜAÜG" shows that it was not only built for beef labeling (Re = Rinderetikettierung) also for beef identification (Rk = Rinderkennzeichnung).
"Rinderkennzeichnungs- und Rindfleischetikettierungsüberwachungsaufgabenübertragungsgesetz"
The offical name for the law was: "Gesetz zur Übertragung der Aufgaben für die Überwachung der Rinderkennzeichnung und Rindfleischetikettierung"
Keep up learning german - it's not so hard as it seems :-)
