Actually in this context, I would think that "Ich habe Söhne" is perfectly fine. There is no difference between saying "I have sons" and "I have boys".

If anything, "I have boys" sounds a little odd. I could only think of that working as a response to someone else saying "I have daughters/girls" or to the question "Do you have children/boys/sons/girls/daughters?". And even then, a more logical response might be "I have one boy" or "I have two/three/etc. boys"
