use - utilize

Ich brauche mal die Hilfe von einem nativ speaker: Was genau ist der Unterschied zwischen use und utilize?

Übrigens habe ich dasselbe Problem in Spanisch usar und utilizar. Wäre schön, wenn mich jemand erleuchen könnte, Danke!

Sorry that I can't translate this into German, but here is some advice from a native speaker. And don't worry, many native speakers don't know the difference.

'Use’ refers to the proper and intended job with which the individual or item is acceptably associated. ‘Utilize’ is more creative, meaning that you have found a not-so-traditional manner in which to create a new function for the individual or item.

It should be noted, that when it comes to people, there is a significant difference between ‘using’ someone, and ‘utilizing’ them. That boils down to intention. When we use someone, we do so with the intention of gaining solely for ourselves, and almost always, the act requires at least a small amount of deceit. Utilizing someone has a more pure intention, meaning that there is no deceit, and we assign them to the position in our lives or company for a greater good. You can utilize someone’s talents to help you through a rough emotional patch, or to increase your business profits. The intention of utilization is more reciprocal.

Thank you very much. I think you gave a pretty good advice. Unfortunately i am not good at following rules, I learn better with examples, which can give me a feeling for the use (?) of words. If you would be so kind to add some more examples, in which the use is distinct, I would appreciate it very much. Thanks a lot.

You can use a fork to eat with, or you can use a fork to prop open a window,. However, you can not utilize a fork for eating, while you can utilize a fork to prop open a window.

Also, in everyday speech, most people will just use 'use' for everything (except possibly people as was explained).

'Utilize' is more likely to come up in a formal or work environment, or when working on some kind of project. There's nothing wrong with using it in normal conversation, it's just not as common.

Sie können fast die gleichen Worte Beide Bedeutung verwenden. Ich lerne Deutsch, es tut mir leid für meine Fehler.

I would like to know the difference between them. But thank you anyway. German is even harder to learn, good luck to you!

There is almost no difference. I cannot find one example where I can show you the difference, they are shown as "sinonimos" in the dictionaries. I searched. In a strict sense utilizar is to obtain benefit from something and usar is to use, however in real life they are the same.

Alguns exemplos para deixar a diferença mais clara:

Eu uso uma camisa. Eu uso o mesmo caminho todos os dias. Ele usa drogas. Ela usa sempre as mesmas palavras.

Eu utilizo o telefone para falar com você. Ele se utiliza de mim para subir na vida. Ele é utilizado pela empresa. Ele utiliza a madeira para acender o fogo.
