Taidhbhse an chrainn - Cuid 1

The opening paragraph of a story with notes:

Ins an tsean aimsir bhí fear ann dar bh'ainm Páidín Ruadh Ua Ceallaigh, agus bhí sé 'na chónaí ag bonn Chnoic Néifin Bhig. Bhí sé pósta, ach ní raibh aon chlann aige ach aon iníon amháin, agus bhí sise dall ó rugadh í. 'Sé an t-ainm a bhíodh ag na comharsanaibh uirri, "Nóra Dhall" agus bhí tuairim aca go mbíodh sí leis na daoinibh maithe. Ní raibh de ghabháltas ag Páidín ach dhá acra talún, agus ar an ábhar sin bhí sé an-bhocht. Bhíodh sé amuigh gach uile oíche, fliuch nó tirim, fuar nó te, agus ní raibh a fhios aige céard a bhíodh á thabhairt amach; ach bhí intinn mhí-shuaimhneach aige, agus níor fhéad sé fanacht istigh.

Taidhbhse an chrainn = The ghost of the tree

Ins an = sa = in the

an tSean aimsir = the old times, long ago

bhí fear ann dar bh'ainm X = There was a man to whom X was a name. = There was a man called X

(dar bh' = to whom .... was)

Ua = An older form of the Ó in Irish surnames

ag bonn X = at the base of X

Cnoc Néifin beag = a hill northwest of Dereen in County Mayo (appears in its genitive here)

Clann = children

dall = blind

ó rugadh í = Since "they" birthed her = Since she was born

'Sé an t-ainm = Is é an t-ainm = It is the name

Comharsa = Neighbour, here in its dative plural Comharsanaibh. The dative plural being a special plural used after prepositions, such as "ag" in this case.

tuairim = opinion

daoine maithe= the good people = the otherworldly inhabitants of Ireland, anything not a living human, demon or angel but sentient. Again appearing in its dative plural

gabháltas = land holdings

dhá acra talún = two acres of land, an Irish acre is 1.62 US acres. Talamh (land) has two genitives Talaimh and Talún. Talún tends to be used in fixed phrases and is feminine.

ar an ábhar sin = for that reason

gach uile = every

céard a bhíodh á thabhairt amach = what used to be being given out

intinn mhí-shuaimhneach = an unsettled, wandering or restless mind

For readers who are more familiar with SI units than with US customary units or Imperial units, 90 Irish acres ≅ 59 hectares, so dhá acra ≅ 1·311 heicteár.

Go raibh maith agat. I am only half way through the Irish course but I could read some of it. It is nice to have something to read besides my Irish children's books, lol.
