"Il nous apprend les mots."

January 26, 2013

Does the word "apprendre" mean both 'teach' and 'learn' in French?

Yes. I'm not positive about this, but if it has an indirect object (nous in this sentence) it means teach, otherwise it means learn.

In this sentence: Il is the subject, les mots is the direct object, and nous is the indirect object, so because nous is in the sentence, it means teach, but take it out and it would mean "he learns the words"

What's the grammar behind this set up? I'd like to learn the rule
