Why is it 'het Nederlands' and not just 'Nederlands'? I've seen this before but I don't know why/when to use 'het' here

Why not "people sing in the Netherlands"? One has to paraphrase the passive anyways.

there is no straight translation of this into English. Either DL should avoid such sentences or provide a long list of allowed answers covering all plausible possibilities.
