I've had this issue in more than one language. Is it the team that chooses the pictures or is it a duo thing?

I really wish they would go back to the drawings.

Is it the team that chooses the pictures or is it a duo thing?

The team choose one set of images (among various sets created by Duo) --- and can't choose only part of the images in the set --- to be associated with a lexeme. So, if Duo created a set that contains images that don't fit to your case, you have the choice between not adding any image or adding a set where 70%, 80% or 90% (or more) of the images are perfect and hope the system will not just choose the wrong one).
Then, in the exercise as shown here, it's Duo system that will take one unique image inside the entire set that contributors selected.

I checked in the incubator:

  • the image for mèo belongs to a set of images Duo tagged as "cat/chat/gato/..."
  • the image for sở thú belongs to a set of images Duo tagged as "animal/animal/animal/..."

Thank you.

That explains why animal seems to be the one word I've seen this most in. In more than one language I've been asked for animal and given 2 or even 3 pictures of animals.

"Cat" means "Mèo" (Picture 3). Although they are almost similar pictures, the word in picture two is "Sở thú", it means "zoo".

well those types of exercises are usually in the very beginning to introduce new vocab, so how can someone know which one is correct if they're doing the lesson for the first time? should be changed IMO
