What distinguishes "wieder" from "erneut"?

"wieder" is more frequent in spoken language I'd say, but in general they have the same meaning. They both imply that something is done again.

This sentence is almost like an idiom though, I would say. You wouldn't use "erneut" in this case. Maybe a little like "(no) lesson learned" in English?
