A Suggestion: Notifications of Replies to Stream Comments

When I post a message to somebody's stream, they are notified. When I receive a message from somebody, I am notified. However, replies to these messages I need to check manually. I think that we should have notifications of replies to our Stream comments.

The notification system in general needs quite a bit of work. For example, we still can't see any more than five notifications. This is a big problem for people (like me) who like to answer/receive questions in different language forums!

Me, too! Additionally, notifications still only update if one refreshes the page...

and while I mentioned to email notifications, I use its a pain if I want to use my email for more than just a notification (I check my email through my mobile device), I'd much prefer to use the notifications within DL, and not have to switch back and forth from email to DL:

I'm still getting email notifications. The bell is a real problem so I don't use it anymore.

Have you seen this: http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1480196 It has revolutionized my DL experience.

Edit Oops, I forgot you've already been there and commented a while back, wazzie. lol.

Indeed - why can't I see the full length of notifications in my stream? If I look under the bell icon for notifications, it offers me the link "See more". Yet this link takes me to my stream where there are almost NONE of the these notifications (e.g. there are no links to replies others have left to my comments). To me, this is a great hindrance - and apparently also to you!

Exactly, it makes no sense to show us our feed. This is my main problem. If "See more" took us to an actual list of our recent notifications, then the five notification limit wouldn't bother me so much.

Yes, I agree! Otherwise, you might remember a day later that you posted that message, and then scroll down forever to see if they replied. And then if you reply back, forget it, they will never see it. It's really hard to have a conversation that way, lol.

I vote for this, and I vote for turning OFF notifications that our translations have been edited. With the new design, I don't think there's a way to disable those, and they're driving me nuts.

Translation edit notifications are like spam that pushes useful notifications out of the alert queue. I don't feel any urge to know whenever someone edits a translation I did three weeks ago. If I want to keep up with the article, I'll go look at it.

Replies to stream comments would be extremely useful. Scrolling back more than a day just to check on possible conversational replies takes forever. Email is clunky.

I agree, but at least there are email notifications :)

Email notifications, to my knowledge, have the same limitations.

When I write on someone else's stream, I don't get a notification, but I get an email when they respond.
When someone writes on my stream, I get a notification (but maybe not an email)?

edit: I just checked, I get notification in email both way.

Either way, it's not very consistent. :-/ I just want to see this fixed. :-)

Hi buunny,

Double check your settings. If that option has been activated but isn't working, let Troubleshooting know. This feature should still be working. :)

I don't mean like email notifications, but the little bell on the right doesn't tell me anything at all. X|

Ah, I see what you mean. yeah, it shows 5 things and the Activity stream notifications are usually extremely delayed. If you've already got 5 things on there, it's effectively buried save if you look in the stream itself :(

Yeah. A girl wanted to talk to me in Portuguese like a week ago and I never look on my stream. So, now I think the opportunity has passed. DX

I don't think we should be notified via email, only on Duolingo. That's what I think.

I don't use email notifications (you can turn the off in settings), but even on here, you're not notified of replies to Stream comments.

Hi ShelbyHill,

Email notifications are essential to my work moderator, including Activity stream comments. In fact Activity comments are my first priority when checking my notifications. So, eep I don't want those gone. :) If you are on the new layout, you can customize which notifications you want to receive.

Here is how to find your notifications:

Alt text

And then choose "Notification" at the bottom of the menu:

Alt text

Some folks have expressed that notifications mix with their inbox and it can become a little chaotic. I know it was for me. However, I've since discovered that many email carriers offer some sort of filter option so you still receive notification, but they don't mix with your inbox or go to spam or trash. So, I created a guide to show how it works on Gmail: https://www.duolingo.com/comment/1480196 It should be a similar process for other email carriers as well.

I hope this has been helpful ^_^

Yeah I just want the option of email notifications to stay but I want to get my notifications within DL as well... Especially when I'm on my smart phone otherwise I have to back and forth between an email and a browser page instead of from direct within my DL app!
