Difference between thấy, xem and nhìn?

Is "my cat sees me" not appropriate?

That would be "con mèo của tôi thấy tôi". "My cat sees me" (thấy) has a sense of surprise. As if your cat just noticed you and didn't realize your presence. "My cat looks at me" (nhìn) implies that your cat knew where you were and wanted to turn to look at you. I hope that helps!

English doesn't make that distinction. "Seeing" rarely implies surprise.

How do I know if it’s look or see? The dictionary sure doesn’t help.
