The use of the pronoun depends on the grammatical gender of the noun.

Male nouns require en: en elg, en mann
Neuter nouns need et: et hus, et tre
For female nouns, you can use either ei or en: ei kone, en bok

When learning new nouns, it is important to also learn their gender.

The grammatical gender of a word is something that you simply have to memorise (as you have to do in German, Spanish, French and many many other Indo-European languages). All words that are neutral are "et-words" and all words that a masculine or feminine are "en-words". In Bokmål, using "ei" instead of "en" as the indefinite article of feminine nouns is an optional thing, which makes things actually easier if you want so :)
