A new EP (and BP) course!

I don't know if anyone has been following Memrise's membus adventure, but it looks like the first phase of their new courses is started.

http://www.memrise.com/course/1123007/portuguese-brazilian-1/

They have Portuguese (EP and BP) versions. It's broken into 7 parts, so you can skip the basics if you want. The audio sounds very good. I think they used the same voice actress for both, but she's definitely pronouncing it differently between the two courses.

They will be adding video clips of people speaking phrases sometime in the next year (for pro users), but that doesn't take away from the free offering at all.

There aren't that many people in the course yet, so it must have just launched. Right now I'm 24 in the ranking after finishing one lesson ;)

I saw they broke up their existing A1 (now 1-3) and A2 (now 4-7) courses into this new 7 part structure. This was for English, French German and Spanish.

I wonder if they will create new 7 part courses for the other languages on the Membus tour. Italian etc....

I like the new breaks. I'm doing the first course just to practice my accent (which keeps slipping into BP), but I won't want to review it with the newer material. They've been listening to a lot of user feedback lately, which makes me feel good about paying for the pro for a year :).

I like having official courses, but it is going to be harder to maintain a streak with the new structure. I am still trying to decide whether to switch from the old A1 and A2 courses - which I started because I assumed they would get the new immersion mode (Membus videos).

As an alternative, I might do the new courses and maintain a streak against the Easy Academy courses.

I can understand that. I had a good streak going on a 5000 word Spanish course (165+), but lost it when the beta app didn't register day 168 :/. Now I'm happy if I can maintain 20+ before it hiccups.

Well I wasn't expecting this...

They have just released a 7 part Turkish course:

I had thought all these new courses would be Membus related.

I wonder how many languages they will do this for! I am loving the German courses and cannot wait to try the Spanish and Portuguese courses. I see they have them for French and Turkish as well.

They clarified the new levels if anyone is interested.

"[note: for people who’ve been learning the previous “A1” and “A2” courses, the A1 course roughly equates to courses 1 – 3 of the new courses, and A2 equates to courses 4 – 5. The new courses are extensions and improvements of the old courses, transferred to the new database system. After finishing an old A1 course, if you move over to learning Course 4 in the new system, you’ll be in the right place!]"

I just finished course 2 and it has greatly helped me with my EP pronunciation. I'm still working on my tree (with the sound off). I'm looking forward to ending somewhere in B1 ;)

I really want to learn European Portuguese, so, as a beginner, I'm thinking of giving up on Duolingo. I tried the memrise app for EP. It looks good except some of the writing is too small on my iPad mini. It really annoys me when half the page is empty and I can't read the tiny writing in the middle. The learning exercises are fine, but the text on the vocabulary is tiny.

You don't have to give up on Duolingo for that goal. Turn off the sound exercises and use them to reinforce your writing. I'm using their EP 1, 2, and 3, only returning to Duo Portuguese to refresh skills when it piques my interest.

I find it strange that the iPad app would do that. My Android tablet uses the extra real estate just fine and we normally get improvements the week after the iPad version.

If you look up the Portuguese (European) Courses in the web version, you'll only see 1, 2, 4 and 7. Where are 3, 5 and 6?

Edit: I just noticed that the "missing" courses do show up in the iOS app.

I was able to see them on my Android phone. The courses were launched in the last week or so. I wonder if they are still working out the kinks with the tags. Previously, EP and BP courses would often show up in both categories.

Yes, I just checked and they're all there. I'm using Android as well.

Yeah, just checking them out :D. They're great. I mean I'm learning Brazilian Portuguese so Duolingo is okay for me but it's always interesting to learn about European Portuguese too :). I like its sound. :)

You could alternate between their BP and EP courses as a challenge to your ear.

Yes, that's what I'm intending to do :). I'm closer to Portugal so it's always nice to learn some EP because it may come in handy one day :). Thanks a lot for sharing the links!

Are you having any source of trouble on the grammar? BP and EP have some diferences that may be tricky for who's learning.

I have a grammar book that discusses the differences. They aren't as great as some people made them out to be.

Yeah, I agree with you, but I guess a native opinion may be too partial.

Hey, thanks dude. I'm going to add it to my list :). I think the only short coming for memrise personally is that the progress doesn't save across devices. And, if I do any app cleaning I lose my progress on the app. You'd think they would fix that situation by now :/.

I'm not sure what you mean. My progress has always been saved across devices. I use my computer, phone, and tablet, often in the same day.

You probably have the ninja setup bro. My progress is not synced across devices (I have multiple phones which I use at different times) even though I can see all my courses..

Your situation is not typical. One of the features that Memrise has always touted is the synced progress. Why not try troubleshooting?

http://feedback.memrise.com/knowledgebase/articles/767382-app-not-syncing-why-is-the-app-not-updating

I've had a couple hundred of my students never have a problem with syncing in the last two years, for what it's worth.
