Sunday again

Hello everyone,

our new team members have started working on the course as well, and we're one week closer to beta (right?). Our audio recordings are getting underway and while there is a schedule, I'd rather give you a more concrete ETA once we have a better idea of whether there are any problems and delays.

So in the meantime we're working on improving all the little bits in the course that still need tweaking!

Thanks for bearing with us for another week, and you'll hear from us again soon!

Listening to a looooot of Hungarian

Hello everyone,

so, we got an e-mail yesterday with a link to a large .zip-file whose contents are over 4000 short clips of Hungarian audio! We're in the process of checking them to see whether there's anything wrong that should be fixed, but as the clips are all very short, that will not take forever.

So — we have our audio and if there's nothing wrong with the recordings they will be matched up with our sentences over the next couple of days! How's that for some good news?

Have a good weekend!

One million learners!

Thanks to Duolingo team's efforts in making the course reach more users, I am delighted to report that the English for Hindi course has now over one million users! It is still a drop in the ocean for a country with more than half a billion speakers who know Hindi.

I also do believe that the learnership of the upcoming reverse course - Hindi for English, is going to fuel the growth for the English for Hindi course. Way to go!

TL;DR

Duo goes to India - not in pictures alone! English for Tamil and English for Bengali are now in the incubator. French for Arabic has made it to Phase 3!

Thank you for these updates!! You are very appreciated!

These are what the flags look like for the courses not out yet:

June 5, 2016

Cool! :)

Also, wouldn't the flag for English for Bengali speakers be the same flag Duolingo uses for all its other English courses? ;)

It would, but many people know what that looks like, so I put the Bengali flag.

Finally a more precise date! Take my lingots!! ;)

Thanks again to you for letting me know about it in the first place! Otherwise, I probably even wouldn't have noticed this announcement.

PS I see you are Swedish (or you are learning it, I'm a bit confused). I'm also starting the Swedish tree and I hope at least to fall in love with this language. So far I just love the way it sounds :D

June 11, 2016

Really? I'd be exhilarated :D I'm planning on starting a new tree from the last week of June and I'd love to start Hebrew but I thought it would take them a bit more time to get it into beta. I rather hoped for the quick release of Greek or Hungarian. Keep my fingers crossed for the Hebrew team. Thanks for the news!

JitenGore,

Many thanks and congratulations are in order for your two year anniversary! Putting together the WIU is a lot of hard work and it is very much appreciated, and two years worth of updates is a great testament to your dedication to language learning! Your updates are a huge motivator!

Also, congratulations of 1,000,000 English for Hindi learners. What a magnificent accomplishment!

You are the man, woohoo!

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/J-Steven

Congratulations JitenGore for taking the WIU way beyond the length and quality than I was doing. I know that putting just one together can take a few hours each week. I will second ddbeachgirl's comments on this being a huge motivator! I think the positive impact the WIU has on people itself is a huge motivator to continue doing your great work :)

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Thanks ddbeachgirl & J-Steven for your kind words! I didn't see that WIU could serve as a motivator. This is even a bigger reward for the small effort I put in!

Watching the Romanian tree progress is slowly driving me insane.

It's the one language on duo that I would have a specific use for beyond, "It'd be cool to know" and here we are so close to the end and the progress bar is going backwards! I know they're working hard though!

Also wanted to say, 10% for Portuguese for French is huge! Congrats to that team. (I don't speak either Portuguese or French, just enjoy seeing numbers go up) And mad props to Team Czech with clearing the 1000 word mark and hitting 50% Just impressive consistency.

Thanks Jitengore, have not been following WIU for 2 years because I've only been on DL for like not quite a year, but checking WIU is definitely a part of my weekly routine, so thanks for fueling my obsession with checking progress bars.

https://www.duolingo.com/DrSwordopolis

That's quite the ambitious date for Bengali.

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/DonFiore

I think English trees have generally been pretty fast since they don't (have to) involve as much planning because they already have the general tree. Even the audio is there so they just need to translate it.

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Yes! But don't forget the translations for the UI strings - they have to be newly done because the Duolingo interface does not yet exist in Bangla (or Tamil)!

Team Duolingo might choose to source this work thru another channels though, making an earlier launch a possibility.

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/DrSwordopolis

It's true that Bengali can use the Hindi tree structure generally if they wish to...

Tamil (and Telugu) won't have recourse to that.

You appear to think that those are going to be courses from English.

They are not, they'll be of English, and probably all English courses have the same tree structure.

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/jitengore

Yes, English tree

June 5, 2016

https://www.duolingo.com/DonFiore

I mean they can use any English tree. Of course it's better to optimise it so you don't spend too much time teaching concepts that are familiar to X speakers, but they could use something like English for Spanish since the features of English remain the same.
