Word order in questions (in the French language)

Hello,

I speak English and am learning French. I've recently learned the following set of questions:

1 Où tu habite? (Where do you live?) 2 Quel âge tu as? (What age are you?) 3 Quel est votre animal préféré? (Which is your favourite animal?)

In the first and second example, the question-word entity is followed by the same word order as in an assertive sentence; in the third example, however, the question-word entity is followed by a reversed word order.

Could you let me know which French questions utilize the word order of an assertive sentence and which ones utilize inversion between the subject and the conjugated verb?

Additionally, I was wondering whether both of the following questions are correct French sentences:

4 Qui est ta matière préférée? 5 Quelle est ta matière préférée?

Finally, could you be so kind as to explain to me the difference between "quel/quelle/quels/quelles" and "lequel/lequelle/laquels/laquelles"?

"Merci beaucoup" in advance, KM

This should be in the French forum, but I'll answer anyway.

Provided that you want to use the normal inverted French question:

1: This should be Où habites-tu?.

2: I hear Quel âge as-tu? more often.

3: I think this is right....

4: No.

5: Yes.

6: The le/la/les forms are referring to "which one" or "which ones," not just which.

Not sure I followed everything.

  1. I would say "Où habites-tu?" or "Tu habites où?", not "Où tu habites"
  2. Ditto. "Quel âge as-tu" or "Tu as quel âge?"

No idea what an assertive sentence is (poor education, sorry).

  1. Incorrect.
  2. Correct.

This should help for "quel" http://french.about.com/od/grammar/a/adjectives_exclamative.htm
This should help for "lequel" http://french.about.com/od/grammar/a/lequel.htm

An assertive sentence is a statement. For example, il est un hommme would be an assertive sentence because it asserts that the subject of the sentence is a man.

This is in the wrong forum. About the first question; I heard that putting the verb before, makes the question "very" formal.

It doesn't. The inverted question is common.

Many thanks to everyone for offering feedback.

Also, it appears that both of the following are valid question statements in French:

  1. Quel âge as-tu?
  2. Tu as quel âge?

Which sentences do people say more often in practice? What's the rule of thumb for deciding when to ask an inverted question and when not to?

Merci, KM
