  • le in front of a masculine word
  • la in front of a feminine word

So you have to learn (by heart) the grammatical gender of the noun.
Learning a noun in French (like in various other languages) is learning both

  1. its grammatical gender.
  2. its spelling

Learning only one of both informations is learning partially how to say the word in French.

Note: There is also l', but you'll see it in the lessons.

Just want to add to this that le and la could also be a direct object to mean her, him, or it in a sentence.
