Why does "this dog with me" translate as "I have a dog"? Is there a specific reason for this wording?

Welsh doesn't have the verb "To have" so we have a couple of ways to construct it, and they all literally translate as "A _ is with me". Also "Mae" doesn't mean "this" it means "is".

I have read that this is a feature of the Celtic languages in general.
