I am wondering why "Я студент, а він теж студент." is not accepted, as in the other phrases "а" is used, for example "Моя мати тут, а мій батько там."

Yep, my thoughts also, which is why I went for 'а' on this occasion

The anglicized word, takozh, had not been presented previous to this question.

Why is the second choice incorrect? Apart from the different word order, I can't see any problems

What was the second choice?

Yes, this word is in Russian. In Ukrainian there are "теж/також".

I thought when joining two compete sentences 'a' was used. When making a comparison or joining words together 'i' was used.
