Possible Future Welsh Language Course?

Hi Duolingo. Having completed your course in French, I am very impressed with the design and learning potential on offer on both the website and Android app. Recently I stumbled upon the Incubator section of the website, where it seems one can volunteer to be a contributor in developing the framework for new language learning. As a first language speaker of both English and Welsh, I'd like to inquire as to the possibility of being a contributor for a Welsh language learning tool, as I have many good contacts in the Welsh-speaking community, and we are currently sorely missing such a tool as Duolingo to promote and simplify learning of the Welsh language. Many thanks for the site, my French has improved immensely

Hi there,

If you are a native speaker in both languages, by all means apply to the incubator! If enough skilled people apply, the course will be created in the future. So apply to the incubator and get people form your community to apply as well. It is not clear which courses are built at what time, though. So it might take a while after you applied. However, I read somewhere that DL plans to built around 50 courses with the incubator this year - so things are definitely speeding up.

Good luck !

The best part about Welsh: Tolkien based his Quenya language on it. ;)

Quenya was inspired by Finnish, Sindarin is based on Welsh.

The trouble is when applying to become a course contributor, one can only apply to the existing Duolingo languages, for speakers of "Enter Other" language, so one cannot apply to contribute to a course for a new language. I have tried contacting Duolingo via Facebook and E-mail with the proposal but have received no reply. It may be that I'd have to wait until Duolingo builds the new courses for the incubator.

ahhh I thought that changed recently, but I was wrong. Only the 'from' language can be any language, you are right!

So you need to built the reverse course first - that is how it currently works for all other languages.

Also, the moderators of both directions are (usually?) the same, so if you wanted to contribute to that course you would probably (?) need to contribute to the reverse course as well anyways.

Of course, in this case, there are certainly more English speakers interested in Welsh than vice-versa, but there are always the crazy reverse-coursers, including me.

I got you! For courses like Welsh is would make more sense the other way around… but I guess it is just how the user interface currently works. Maybe they will do sth else for courses like that that have very few native speakers. I guess Luis last comment touches on the issue a bit http://www.duolingo.com/comment/1627314

This especially is in the case of constructed languages, where all the speakers (aside from the kids of some of the more hardcore learners) are non-native. The only point I could see in this is that let's say everybody learns Esperanto; now they can all take courses for Esperanto speakers.

Good news. Having checked today on the "Contribute to a course" page, Duolingo has indeed added, along with several new languages, an "Enter Other" option in the "Enter Language" dropdown menu. I'll apply shortly, and hope to get other speakers of Welsh on board as soon as possible in order to get the course up and running. Diolch pawb a iechyd da i chi i gyd

Sut mae, newydd ddod ar draws y sgwrs yma, ar ol i fi ddechrau trafodaeth tebyg tua mis yn ol. Tiwtor Cymraeg i Oedolion dw i a dw i'n gweld potensial enfawr mewn cwrs Cymraeg ar Duolingo. Mae'n amlwg bod digon o gefnogaeth ar gael eisoes i ddatblygu cwrs. Efallai y problem yw perswadio Duolingo bod gwerth mewn caniatau i ni wneud y cwrs.

Dw i'n meddwl y byddai'n syniad creu fforwm trafod rhywle (Facebook? Yahoo Groups?) er mwyn meddwl am ffordd o lobio Duolingo. Hefyd byddai'n rhaid penderfynu pa dafodiaeth i'w ddefnyddio mewn cwrs Cymraeg, neu efallai byddai angen creu dau gwrs, De a Gogledd?

Dau gwrs gwahanol i ddechreuwyr, fel sy'n digwydd yn genedlaethol, ac efallai taw dyna broblem i ddechrau. Alla i ddim gweld Duolingo yn creu dau gwrs gwahanol i iaith mor fach.

Er hynny, rwy'n siŵr y byddai diddordeb mewn cwrs gan bobl ar draws y byd.

Dwi'n cytuno. Efallai dwi'n dangos tipyn o duedd wrth ddweud hyn, ond dwi'n credu bod creu cwrs tafodiaith De Cymru yn well, dim ond oherwydd Caerdydd yw'r prifddinas, ac felly efallai bydd gan y cyhoedd mwy o ddiddordeb o ddysgu'r iaith yn yr iaith a'r tafodiaith yma. (Dwi'n dod o Gaerdydd, ond plis peidiwch â fy nghasau! Dim ond syniad!) :)

Haha, 's neb yn y dy gasáu di! Y cwestiwn yna fyddai beth yw tafodiaith Caerdydd? Mae digon o blant y brifddinas yn dweud pethau fel "efo" a "mae gen i", sydd ddim yn perthyn i dafodieithoedd traddodiadol y de.

Hefyd mae llawer o siaradwyr Cymraeg Caerdydd heddiw wedi dod o'r gogledd yn wreiddiol ac mae plant y brifddinas wedi cael eu dysgu gan ogleddwyr, felly mae rhyw dafodiaith newydd anhraddodiadol yna.

Er hynny, fallai byddai'n syniad dechrau gyda Chymraeg y de gan fod mwy o bobl yn dysgu Cymraeg y de na Chymraeg y gogledd. Bydd cwricwlwm Cymraeg i Oedolion yn newid cyn bo hir hefyd, felly rwy o blaid gweithio gyda thiwtoriaid/darparwyr Cymraeg i Oedolion fel y bydd Duolingo'n cefnogi oedolion sy'n mynychu dosbarthiadau.

Dw i'n cytuno gyda'r safbwynt ar anymarferoldeb dau gwrs. Eto mae angen rhywsut cynnwys elfennau'r dau brif dafodiaeth er mwyn gwneud y cwrs yn ddefnyddiol led-led Cymru

Syniad da, dwi'n meddwl y bydd trafod y mater mewn lle mwy cyhoeddus efallai yn tynnu eu sylw at y peth. Dwi'n credu mae dim ond ychydig o bobl sy ar dîm Duolingo ac felly nad ydynt efallai'n gweld llawer o'r sgwrsiau a ceisiadau sy'n cael eu hel atynt.

Ynglyn a creu dau gwrs, dwi'n tybio y bydd un cwrs sy'n dysgu bob math o Gymraeg yn iawn, megis y cwrs Ffraneg (sy'n derbyn Ffraneg Ffrengig a Cwebecaidd), y cwrs Saesneg (Saesneg Prydeinig a UDA) y cwrs Sbaeneg (Sbaeneg De'r Amerig) ayyb.

Rwy'n siŵr bod modd cyfaddawdu a chreu un cwrs os cawn ni'r bobl iawn at ei gilydd i drafod yr ochr ieithyddol. Rwy'n gweld taw dim ond un cwrs sydd gan fois Say Something in Welsh, sy'n gwrs llwyddiannus iawn.

Beth fyddai'r ffordd orau ymlaen? Oes rhywun â chysylltiad â phobl "teci" y llywodraeth / Canolfan Bedwyr Bangor / criw haciaith? Pwy fyddai orau i ddechrau trafod y peth?

I'd be up for brushing up the old cymraeg. Can't wait to read all the confused posts as people get to deal with mutations and the fact that y is a vowel.

Mutations aren't actually that hard. I'm learning Cornish and it has mutations too and they are actually quite simple. In Cornish y can be a vowel too.

That's great news, thanks! I think there's just been a temporary hold on new courses or something as no new courses have been added in a while. It seems a lot of people are waiting for answers from Duolingo staff, hopefully we get some soon.

I also saw that Irish Gaelic was accepted, but so far they haven't added anyone to the course, so i'm not exactly sure what's going on. As far as i know, that was the last course to be added to the incubator (at least for English speakers).

Go to the course list (on the webpage click on the flag symbol next to your profile picture) Click on Add a new course, Scroll to the bottom of the next page, Click on the Welsh section, Click on the box for updates. The course is due out towards the end of the year. I'd love to be able to contribute but unfortunately, like you my Welsh is very limited. If you happen to know anybody who's passionate about teaching Welsh then please mention to them as they may be interested in contributing to the development of the course. :-)

My parents lived in Indonesia in the 1970s for a while, and my father spoke it quite well. But I've never learnt it myself. Will be interesting to try an Asian language through the DL method.
