Difference between Kitap okurum and Kitabı okurum

Earlier I thought those two meant the same (I read the book), but Duo seems to distinguish them like below:

Kitap okurum = I read books Kitabı okurum = I read the book

Do they actually differ in the meanings? If they do, how are they different?

Yes, they do. When you say ''Kitap okurum'', you mean that you read books in your spare times, you mean that you have a hobby like playing videogames. It can be an answer of ''Do you read books?'' But when you say ''Kitabı okurum'', you actually mean that there is a specific book that you read. Like you say ''i read... ''that'' book.'' you use ''the'' word as an adjective. I hope that it will be helpful.
