Why do I need the il? I mean directly translated to english this would mean: "I eat the my sandwich", right? Bit wired. Is "Mangio mio panino." wrong?

Yes "Mangio mio panino" is wrong, in Italian "mine" = "ïl mio", "yours = il tuo" etc. The only time you can/should drop the article is when referring to family members (singular!) such as "mia madre", "mio padre", "mia sorella", "mio zio". (However, with plural you keep the article "le mie sorelle", "i miei zii" etc). /////// Missing the burger bus btw :) :) :)
