My first french conversation

After 4 months of using Duo, i had my first encounter with French natives. I was at the Mexican Airport waiting for the aeroplane and a french couple sat next to me. They start talking and i understood some words, i was a little nervous to talk to them, but what the heck, i introduce myself and we start a conversation. I said some wrong words but they corrected me and we laugh a lot. They asked me where i learned french and i show them the app =) It was a fantastic experience, and now i am more than motivated to keep on learning French .Merci Beaucoup Duolingo!!

Anyways, good luck with the french and keep on practicing! ;)

I attend a local French-speaking Meet-Up once a week. The skill levels range from native speakers to, well, people like me. I am able to read and speak, but engaging in a conversation is quite challenging. My head feels like it will explode after an hour of fumbling for the words to express myself. Yet everyone is very helpful.

So, cheers to you, for taking advantage of your opportunity and learning as much as you could from the experience.

One tip I would offer to others: Work out in advance a typical Q&A for meeting someone new: "What your name? What's your job? Where did you study language? etc..." I know how to say these things, but under pressure, it's not pretty!

I'd rather know what I'm saying wrong than to sound like a dum dum. And good for you for being brave and talking to them!! That's what we're here for, right? To learn how to speak to more and more of the world?

I have spoken French with two Japenese men on a train in Germany. You never know where you will meet someone. I was in Munich once with fellow soldiers when we met six girls. Two were French, two were German and two were Italian but they all spoke French. They were students in France in Munich for the weekend. There I was, a young American GI in Germany speaking French to an Italian girl via Roma. It was the weekend the Germans won the world cup in 1974 in Munich. What an experience.

I know exactly what you mean! It sucks knowing there's little chance to practice French in person. But where I live, it's almost impossible to NOT run into Spanish speakers!

That's great! I'm living in France currently, and have been for almost five months, but I'm far too shy to speak to anyone in French unless it's absolutely necessary! So I really admire your courage and I'll (try!) to take a leaf from your book!

That's fantastic. I started on the French last month in the hope that I'd become semi-confident speaking it by the end of the year. Reading your post, along with others, keeps me focussed on continuing. It really is fun as well.

Thank you Angel for this message, it is something what I need to hear now. I am with Duo since Christmas, now level 10, but even I try to work hard, the progress suddenly slows down. I am loose frequently my hearts and with it also my will and enthusiasmus.

I am planning to cross France from Strasbourg to Andorra with my bike this May and I want to be able to comunicate at very basic level.

That was so brave of you! You just introduced yourself and tried to speak some French. Duolingo is really a great app, maybe I'll be as brave as you one day! :) So amazing to talk with some French people, oh, I would be so happy if I was you! I bet that you were really happy yourself! :)
