So in Hebrew, the actual name of the fish, herring, when swimming in the sea, is דג מלח even though it's not been salted, or marinated, or pickled? It's named after the way it's eaten, or named for the salty water it inhabits? Or is there a separate name for this particular fish, as a species? All I could find was a transliteration of herring, apart from the saltfish word...

Salted fish - as I know it from Egypt - is dried fish preserved by salt. It tastes extremely salty indeed. So salty that people not used to it might not be able to eat it...
